Fun With Mathematics!

How, you may wonder, would it be possible for the Rolling Stones to play only three cities during their 2013 tour, and still make it the highest grossing tour of all time, topping U2's mark of $736,000,000?

Here's how:

London: 10 nights at the O2
New York: 10 nights at the Garden
LA: 10 nights at Staples Center

30 shows x 20,000 tickets sold for each show = 600,000 tickets sold.

600,000 tickets x an average ticket price of $1,250.00 = $750,000,000.

They won't bother to do this at all unless they can at least equal the $558 million they grossed on their last tour. Playing only 30 arena dates, they would have to charge $930.00 per ticket to do that.

OK, if it's numbers we're doing, then the thought might have crossed Mick's mind to be the first to cross the $1 Billion mark.

For that to work, let's take it to 50 shows in 10 centres at 20000 per show.

That would mean a ticket price of $1000 on average.

yeah, that's never going to happen.

One show at the O2.

$50,000 per ticket.

It's in the billion dollar bag.

Suck on that U2.

What is more important. Be the band who played in front of the biggest crow on earth. The Stones have nothing to prove now. They have been the best band in the world in their caterory during few years. This is not a competition or race. they could be in bankrupty in the future, nothing to do with that. And now, put a vinyl on your turntable...

Ack, I am a math teacher and this is the weekend... Anyhow, #1, I think tickets for a long string of shows will have to be reasonable, #2, They may play more than three cities, I think NY, LA and London were just tossed out as examples, and #3, I think they might not be out to break grossing records anymore. This is more of a celebration-- Tix may be steep, but they're going to want to sell out where they play.

they can´t sell out 10 shows in a row,in the same place.Maybe 5+5 but few months in between.Like New York in january 2013 and september 2013.Summer 2013 is for europe.

I'm not certain the Stones are worth 1,250 anymore.
Further, I can't think of a time they ever were...those would be some pretty empty arenas.

Well, the Stones apparently don't want to do it for reasons we can probably understand, but Vegas is where they could keep amassing the dollars. The seats keep getting filled, the people keep coming with the intent of spending their money. It doesn't stop.

Of course there will be a larger percentage of casual and even non-fans, but their money is just as good to the Glimmers I am sure.

Hey tatters where's the fun part? I'll be paying that but for 6 or 7 gigs (including travel expenses)

This is about making the most money possible in exchange for the smallest amount of actual work. If they could do a "Beatles Anthology" type of "reunion", and get paid hundreds of millions of dollars for doing practically nothing, they would. But they're not as big as the Beatles. They'll actually have to go out and play some gigs if they want to make that kind of cash.

Wouldn't break the record since it's not a tour.
