All the shows of Nov 24-29 1969 were excellent, but since the Baltimore version on Get Yer Ya Yas Out comes in perfect qualilty; it's the best listening experience. Also terrific in 1972....the Welcome To New York version is an amazing one, since it's so crystal clear...funny, it's difficult to hear when Taylor is playing with the fingers, and when he's playing with slide...because of his feel and vibrato fingers
Conservative choices...those 2 versions were among the first live versions I did hear.
BTW, think the Leeds 1971 Love In Vain is too slow - and Jagger sounds a bit tired. 1978 Love In Vain is also nice...it's a bit closer to the Faces way of doing it, though. I prefer 1969-1973 when it comes to that song

same here...I wasnt too impressed with the studio version on Let It Bleed, but the live YaYas simply takes this song to another level. breathtaking. perfect.

For me the ya-ya's version is hard to beat, however....

My favorite recent version is from the Staples Centre, Los Angeles, Halloween 2002. Ronnie plays the most amazing lap steel solo ever!
Everything about this solo is so perfect. The tone is to die for!!!

Keith was so impressed that he walked up to him, peered over his shoulder and gave him a big kiss. Ronnie then span round on his stool like a very happy child!

There is both audio and dvd boots of this in circulation and I cannot recommend these enough. The dvd is ever so slightly out of sync but it's not too bad.

I think NO live takes have ever equaled Yas Yas(sorry,I love Ron but Mick has him beat for the slide IMHO). But I guess I'm in a minority here because the studio version with mandolin break is still my favorite of all Vains.

Philly 72 is the best for me!Taylor's cookin.

Some of the "modern" live versions are not that bad either like from 97 and 2003.
Unfortunately they only exist on so-so boots. Wish to hear them in perfect sound!

i always wondered how the Stripped version that they had to restart would've turned out. mick is not 'in character' after the wisecrack about archipeligio. but he was 'in the zone' when they started the first one, like he was gonna sing it and mean it.

my fave's always been Ya-Ya's.

charming. You'd wish they'd act like they'd played that well before.

The '69-'73 versions are the best but,the '02-'03 Licks Tour versions were very good as well. There is no real reason not to like them - at least the ones that I've heard.Hartford 2002 Love In Vain was pretty solid. You can tell even though it was not the best sound quality recording of the tour. The crowd seemed to enjoy it.

Leave it to Taylor to produce two quintessential versions of the song: Baltimore '69 and (pick one) L&G version, MSG '72 version...Actually, try to find a bad one from '71 - '73. He plays with the leads, searching for something of interest, but that is just him. I think the L&G performance is one of the band's great moments on stage. Whew!

It's fun to listen to the evolution of the song on the '69 tour as well. A work in progress right before your ears.

"I wanna tell ever'body out dere in Nyew Ywak...."

By FAR - that 'common' soundboard '72 version.
Taylor's solo on this tour smoked 69's for lunch.
Micks vocals in the coda...
The way the horns build up the last verse...
Nicky's always-gorgeous decorations...

For me, no other version on any other tour (72-winter73) beat these ones.
Not 69, not 78, and certainly no post-89 version even touch it.

anything from '69 through '73 beats all the versions since then in my opinion. The Stripped version is nice though. The Ya Ya's version is excellent of course and it always great in '72/'73 but my absolute favorite is probably New York 7/26/72. I know many people have already mentioned this one but it's just so good.

Taylor's solos are always interesting. In '69 he played both solos with a slide, in open G if I'm not mistaken. By 1970, he'd switched to standard tuning and was playing both solos without a slide. Then in '72 and Australia '73, he played the first solo with a slide and the second without. I do know of at least one exception though. In the first Philadelphia show of '72 (7/20/72), he played both solos with a slide instead of using a slide on just the first as he normally did in '72. Anybody else notice this?

BTW, that Philadelphia 7/20/72 show is awesome. I'd rate it as one of the top 5 performances of the '72 tour, if not the best.

Stripped is a good version IMO. The false start is funny. LIB version is a bit lazy, but good. The vocals could be better.
