It was actually an "out of body" experience, but he didn't know it.

I remember first reading that in the Barbara Charone book, and it was said sarcastically, as if the song was so lame that Keith couldn't stay awake or whatever.
Actually, I think Keith nodded off quite frequently in those years....sometimes maybe even with his eyes open.
Trouble with Keith is that he turns these things into shots at Mick, 'Yeah, I nodded off during 'Fool To Cry' he he he he...'
He looks, or used to look back at his junkie behavior as just .....Being Keef.

Mick was in charge then for a reason, but Keith likes to pretend it wasn't because he was a heroin addict.

I have also been put to sleep by Fool To Cry. Crazy Mama usually came around like smelling salts eventually.

It's strange that people make so much of Keith's heroin addiction when by his own admission it has only been for 10 or 11 years out of the 50 we have had the Stones and their music. It certainly "fit" Keith for a time, who could wish for any change in the music that came from that period?

It is a fact that some people just outgrow the whole scene and don't need to get all recovery focused and that they can even laugh about the experience. I don't mind if Keith is in denial about any of his behaviour, it's none of my/your business really. peace

Keith fell asleep while playing Fool To Cry while watching Muddy paint the ceiling after he fell out of a coconut tree after having his blood changed after he hit the guy on stage on the head with his guitar.

Any others? I've lost track.

It's a Mick song.

No Fool To Cry is brilliant, one of their best ballads!

And Keith used to nod all the time while on heroin, at shows, at rehearsals.

I always thought it was one of their best songs.Well, each to their own.

The only thing that bothers me about Fool To Cry is that it's about Jaggers daughter. With another lyrical theme it could be a drop dead gorgeous love song. Now it's just about fathership and I can't relate to that.

Love the song, but re. the lyrics I feel the same as Disco Volante.
And IMO Keith's contribution to the song, studio and live is very good. The Wah is more subtle on studio rendition, but essential. And in the end part when it goes to the Dm Keith steps up.
On live stage he pretty much uses the song for a solo-ing workout.
The recording does exist on "Low Tide Fair Hits", the Berlin gig in 76.

Does anyone have some of the more recent live renditions of the song?I'm interested in hearing them.I know it was performed a handful of times during No Security tour.Would love to get into the possession of the good sounding version.

Fool to cry is cheesey.

No two ways about it.

It's almost up there with Little Jimmy Osmond "Long Haired Lover from Liverpool".

It's like you said in the first post. He didn't sleep. Just nodded off for a few seconds or shorter as it often happens with opiates. On the 76 tour I remember that happen a few times.
Like Streets of Love Fool to cry tended to come over better live than on record.

Maybe Keith did feel asleep during some gig, but at one the shows in Paris in 1976 he plays wonderful solos and licks on this song.

Good song, (although not even the best ballad on Black and Blue).

Shows the diversity, they can do well in almost any genre and make it their own.

I don't think I'd own more than 3 Stones albums if all they did was rework the Chuck Berry riff endlessly.

Always had mixed emotions about FTC - pun intended. It's not a bad song but I thought it was the wrong choice for the first single from Black and Blue (at least it was in the US, not sure about elsewhere). A lot of people I knew got the impression that the Stones had really gone lame. I always liked for the first single from any Stones album to be a rocker. Even Miss You had everybody beating the "gone disco" outcry that started with Hot Stuff. Of course, Miss You is a much more compelling song than Fool To Cry. (IMO)

If you take away Micks songs or Keith songs from them it just would not be the Stones, it has to have the mix of Jagger and Richards in all the records to give it the balance. Great song I think.

I think that clip is from the Barcelona show. Regardless it still has some good playing by Keith. I always preferred his playing here from Paris 76.

There is a studio version with a lead guitar; is it KR?

I always saw this song as Jagger's version of a great Bobby Bland or Bobby Womack song. The 70s were a great period for urban soul and Jagger had gone way beyond his original influences and tapping into that: Tower of Power,early Tavares. even Hall and Oats........ Worried About You was an extension of that, as was Miss You. How could that be lame?
