Obamas to hold celebration of blues music; Jagger, B.B. King and other artists to perform

By Associated Press, Published: February 13
WASHINGTON — The White House is opening its doors in an invitation to the blues.

Jeff Beck, Mick Jagger, B.B. King and Keb Mo are among an A-list of artists who will perform at the White House Feb. 21 to celebrate blues music and recognize Black History Month.

The program, called “In Performance at the White House: Red, White and Blues,” will be live streamed on the White House Web site, www.whitehouse.gov/live . It will also be broadcast at 9 p.m. Feb. 27 on PBS stations. The American Forces Network will broadcast the program later.

President Barack Obama will deliver remarks at the event.

Obama and his wife, Michelle, have opened the White House to a number of “In Performance” programs that have showcased Hispanic, Broadway and country music, among others.

Jagger at White House for Red, White and Blues
(AFP) – 15 hours ago

WASHINGTON — Mick Jagger will tread in the footsteps of Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan this month and play for US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle at the White House.

The Rolling Stones frontman will join artists including B.B. King, Jeff Beck, Keb Mo, and Buddy Guy for an evening celebrating the Blues in the latest in a string of soirees of different musical genres held by the White House.

The event, directed by Booker T. Jones of Booker T and the MGs, on February 21, will be taped and televised by PBS public television in the United States six nights later.

First Lady Michelle Obama will warm up for the event with a student workshop focusing on the Blues on the same day in the White House's State Dining Room.

The "In Performance" series started soon after the Obamas moved into the White House in 2009.

Highlights include Dylan belting out protest anthem "The Times, They are a Changin'" in the East Room of the presidential mansion, and McCartney crooning the Beatles classic "Michelle" to the First Lady.

That sounds nice! Probably they are going to have a some kind of house band and then different vocalists/guitarists appear to do their bit.

And really nice that the "British Invasion" is acknowledged in the history of blues (and thanks with sssoul and duke richardson for your recollections and giving us some context). That's something The Blues Hall of Fame refuses to do (we had a thread about it some time ago).

Re- Jagger/non-Stones: Gazza's point is spot on. I would also say it if we see how difficult it is for them to hit the stage together - no public apearance for five years, just one jam - no reason to expect them to do some cameo gig out of blue; they most probably would suck big time. I don't see this whole thing anything to do with The Rolling Stones 50 th Anniversary. And I think it is better to not confuse thse two things: the whole occasion and its point would die under the hype of The Stones Anniversary. No reason in any sense.

I can only dream Mick will bring his harmonica. He can leave his guitar at home, but I'd love
to hear him playing the bluesharp.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

From what I can see, if one of the band members as much as farts at any point in 2012 and the other three arent in the immediate vicinity to share the experience, the paranoia about the 'end of the band' and 'no tour' goes into overdrive. Even the entire planet is trembling with nerves now, it seems!

Laughable overreaction.

Perfectly stated

are y'all kidding or what? this is the thrilla in manilla. this is for all
the marbles. this is the apollo theater versus 1600 pennsylvania avenue.
this is mick and keith with approx the same musicians doing approx the same
music within a few days of each other. if keith holds his own, the tour is on.
if keith falters, its not. Yo!

What an honor for Mick!! He should blow them all away, especially if he incorporates a lot of harp playing into his performance, as I suspect he will. Can you imagine him digging up some of his Red Devils material...he'll blow the walls off the White House!

What an honor for Mick!!

The establishment assimilation is now complete.

Is there no one else think just how wrong this all is?

Knighthoods and Presidential performances?

Brian will be turning in his grave.

Kings, queens and presidents are not establishment as we know it - or in that case as Brian, God bless his soul, knew it - anymore. Power relations have moved to other territory! Now, if GoldmanSachs held a celebration for the blues....

It may not be a battle. But the Rev does have a point. Mick and Keith both have seperate performances lined up. Basicly both blues tributes. Not far apart schedule or geography wise.Is it really that big of a stretch to think that 2 guys who have been together for 50 years and started one of the most succesful bands in history, might actually play together? Great, so we get a tour later this year. A tour where the 2 main members still basicly can't stand each others company. Yeah, that'll be fun.

Ok....It is not a tragedy...but it is not easy find a better way of getting relevance, notoriety, publicity, media atention than playing blues in this kind of environment and coincidentally in their anniversary?

Better way than release a disco song, attend a Disney premiere, partying with young models and the like or being quoted in a famous song because of how the singer moves?

and besides ...a cheaper way ?....

I find it a bit strange, that Jagger does not take his band along with him to play the shit out of the president
jeroen

You are right, it is weird. But in Jagger's defense it's probably easier for him to agree to do quick solo appearances without involving the rolling stones organisation than if he had to sit down with the band and negotiate on those quicky projects.

I don't think Mick is playing the Apollo Sumlin gig, is he? Last I heard he was not on the list of performers. Second, Obama is not the ENEMY just because he's the President! He's very cool, very into music and coming from Chicago, don't you think the man loves good blues? He can SING too... ( I'm.....so in love with you...") " I bet Barack goes up on stage to sing with some of the performers..can you picture Mick and Obama sharing a microphone ?? I can!

Individually,I reckon the lads would all have accepted an invite to play in front of Mr President at The White House with other artists of the same calibre and music taste. If they had been invited as The Rolling Stones to play a few songs on their first public appearance for many years, which may have happened, the answer would be a big 'No' I reckon. eye rolling smiley

No kidding. Think about it: Would the Stones come out of the woods for their 50th to be only part of a bill of other performers? pfft! The Stones are their own event. Besides, Mick will be playing blues, not some lame pop crossover garbage, this can only be a good thing.

I can hear Keith spining the story in interviews already "You take Washington, baby, I'll take New York, hehshmthgyth, man."

But why should they perform together? Why can't they do it individually and take all the spotlight they deserve? Each one is a grown man, totally independent artist of his own (relaesed solo albums and everything) If it is The Rolling Stones I would demand each of them to be there, But this is not the case here.

I don't know what, for example, Keith Richards might have added to Jagger's Grammy performance last year. Just posing there Keef-like next to Mick? I don't think that was much needed by anyone, actually. And now, I think it would be thrilling to see Mick doing some blues, play possibly some mean blues harmonica, or whatever, with some other cool people there. And also, if we think about the Sumlin concert, Keith can do the blues-thing wonderfully there by his own. No Jagger needed. Jagger and Richards do not need "support" from the other to shine. Especially their egos.
