In my opinion, she had the best female voice in the last 50 years, easily, in her hey day, that it. In the last few years, she'd lost her edge and her voice was husky and rough...yes, it is tragic but I just can't understand it when someone has the world at their feet, more adoration than most folks ever experience, ( to the extreme extent, I'm sure) and they are Hell bent to destroy themselves and that gift. If you get into the really serious drugs, don't you know that there are facilities that can help you?? Especially if you have the kind of $$ these super stars have....it may sound naive but to basically kill yourself seems more than foolish...everything to live for!!

RIP: Whitney.

She was very much a product of her time. I call it the Clive Davis effect - he even made Aretha sound 'soulless' to an extent in the 80s.
Give her gospel songs a listen - that's where she was sublime.
Her last single, "I Look To Thee" was Whitney after years of struggle, and though you can hear the strain in her voice - the heart was there,

Blaming drugs is just too simple. Trying to ban drugs and/or make them illegal is not possible. Humans are going to find a way to do what humans want to do, it has been like that since the beginning of time. Probably right before the first human entered into the first deal with the world oldest profesion, they probably got high.

People get high, drink booze, do drugs for many reasons.... and to simply blame drugs on this tragedy is too simple... if it wasnt drugs it might have been something else.... Who knows what happened?

I read an article today that said maybe Whitney had spent all of her money, and her voice could not earn her more. It said she was borrowing small amounts, if true, that must have made her feel bad. I dont know if the rumors of running out of money are true..... who knows what is true.... except that in 100 years (if the Earth survives) everyone reading this will probably be dead.

Re: OT: RIP Whitney Houston

I find it interesting that her career had gone away due to her own decisions yet...it's very similar to Whacko minus all the horror aside from the usual about/of her life, the drugs, her idiot boyfriend, etc. She wasn't anything spectacular in terms of being an artist - in my eyes. She never got past what made her the big artist she was that she never lived up to.

The front part of her career was spectactular in regard to what she did. The end part of her career was highly forgetabble. She had things handed to her and couldn't even make that work. Her own decisions didn't care because she didn't care. She'd done it. What was she gonna do? Of course record sales will go through the roof for a week, maybe two, and then it'll be back to how it was - totally forgotten.

She had a hell of a voice. Her decisions obviously were way heavier than what her voice was worth to and for her.

(real nice obit)

How Whitney Houston Ruined Music

---------------------------------------

My favorite vocal on a Rolling Stones record comes not from Mick Jagger or
Keith Richards, but from Merry Clayton on the apocalyptic classic "Gimme
Shelter."
Go listen to that record some time and listen not to the great
guitar interplay or the very fine performance from Jagger, but instead to
Clayton's counter vocal. She sounds like her skin is about rupture, like her
spleen is about to launch itself into orbit. She's singing as if the fate of the
world depends on it. What's more amazing is that as she spins out of control,
she never sounds like she's playing a role; she's purely and perfectly in the
moment and it's extraordinary.

Whitney Houston did that routinely throughout her extraordinary early career.
Etta James is still the greatest of all time, but Whitney was no slouch. She
made mediocre songs memorable, good songs great, and great songs timeless. She
could access a place from within few can and when she summoned it, magic
happened.

She took a pleasant country song by Dolly Parton and made it iconic, legendary.
Nobody knows all the words to "I Will Always Love You" and you don't need to.
Whitney didn't need poetry. She needed five words and one of the greatest vocal
instruments God ever installed inside a human body. The rest of the language is
ornamental. Five words. She told you everything you need to know about love,
passion, devotion, and yearning in five words. Put your pencils down. Lesson is
over. Class dismissed.

She spoiled us by taking ownership of our ears and ruining them for those who'd
dare to follow in her footsteps, by being so damn much better than everyone else
they resorted to parlor tricks, parody, and melisma. She taunted the
competition because she didn't have to do anything special to embarrass them.
She didn't rely on tricks or gadgets; she opened her mouth, sang, and sent
everybody else's ass packing. Damn the masses for trying to hang with her, they
never stood a chance.

I can just imagine her showing up on one of Simon Cowell's 200 shows and doing a
short 20 seconds, a cappella, and him looking out at the other contestants,
asking, "Can any of you do that? Because if you can't, go sit down."

She took a difficult song to sing about a battle from The War of 1812, known
only for being The War of 1812, and made it something beyond patriotism. How
many people have sung "The Star Spangled Banner" over the years? How many
versions are as stirring? How many are as iconic? How many are perfect? One.
Hers. Okay, fine, I'll give you Hendrix from Woodstock as iconic and maybe
stirring, albeit it in a completely different way. It was a great, signature
moment for Jimi and a brilliant deconstruction, but I'll still take Whitney for
pure, clear emotional power and force of will.

I suppose it's only fitting she was called home on a Saturday; it meant she be
on time to lead Sunday morning services. She led the choir of the heavenly hosts
and sanctification sounded better than ever.

I'm a little grumpy with the Big Man above for recalling her but what else was
she supposed to do? Her talent transcends time and place. We held onto her
tightly and in less than a decade -- not even enough to be an entire grain of
sand in the expanse of infinity -- she ruined music. Earth conquered, she moved
on. She slew the pretenders and bathed us in the glory of her gift; not bad for
a life's work.

Maybe she was ready to go home.

Saddened but not shocked to hear of her passing. She had most likely destroyed her body with years of alcohol and drug abuse. None of which interests me. She was a mother and daughter so I feel sorry for her family. However I can't say I held her in much regard as an artist. Some of the early bubblegum pop songs were fun and she was attractive but for me her voice was too technical. Not really soulful like Aretha's or Etta's. Even Amy Winehouse's voice was more touching and honest. I can't believe somebody posted that the Stones should have replaced Lisa with Whitney. So much bad taste on here of late.

I never could stand her singing, and still can't. Just as I can't stand Mariah Careys singing, and can't stand the entire generation it spawned, like Beyonce.

I just hate this technical acrobatry of 'I can sing 16 octaves, and I am going to show it in every two words, preferably with lots of empty air in between'. It's just as I can't stand all the technical guitar wizzards of the 80's, playing a million notes in every bar.

Sorry.

I think that Whitney stood above the likes of Carey, Beyonce, Rihanna and others. She wasn't just a wailer like Carey and she didn't stroll around almost naked in videos or on stage like Beyonce and others. She had class and she had soul. Listen to songs like "I look to you", "I will always love you" and "My love is your love" and tell me differently!

I can see your point. But I think one should needs to separate orignality and being a pioneer from that of the whole genre following one's steps and example. I hate the whole damn idea of "guitar hero" and whatever forms it takes (for example, the worts occured during the posering 80's.) But I simply adore Jimi Hendrix and whatever he did with the guitar. And he is the one most to be 'blamed' for the whole egoist guitar @#$%& (=masturbation) genre. I sense something similar with Whitney Houston. She was able to use her incredible voice for 'pure' artistic expression, and not just showing technical acrobatism that seems to the value of its own since her.

In all honesty I just feel like here we go again - Wacko, Winehouse and now Whitney. All years past any creativity they once had, all washed up addicts, illegal, alcoholic or prescription, same difference. And all destined to be number one for the next month or two while celebs queue up to say how much they loved them and will miss them. (Not having had any contact with them for years.)

Sure it's gonna be reported but let's just report these things, acknowledge they are a sad reflection on human frailty and move on without the eulogies. But it sells I suppose - expect the Sun to front page it for a good week.

I have similar feeligs. The thing is that I know like 5 songs of WH and that's it, so I absolutely don't want to judge her as an artist.

I remeber that I first saw her on TV in I Will Always Love You and Run To You videos an I was just sick of it. I didn't like the songs, but that was okay, what I found unberable weres the videos, all the close-ups of WH with closed eyes, showing how much she could open her mouth and how white her teeth were. Wow, those feelings are comming back as I write it. The whole Bodybuard movie was crap and I was 15, which is the age, that when you are an over-sensitive girl, you wathch it every night and cry, if you are not, you just hate it. So that was my first impression of WH and it prevented me from listening to anything that she recorded. Maybe I am missing a lot, but I think that my view is logical.

Anyway, her death is a sad and tragical thing, just like a premature death of any other human being. R.I.P.

I don't understand this logic that we are supposed to keep quiet about this because a thousand other addicts died the same day. Don't you think there is a difference between a world known megastar who has sold millions of records and Mr N N.
