Semi-OT: Reflecting on yesterday's Stones Cover Band Jam Reunion Jam Session

So the ex-drummer (and when I say ex-drummer I mean he was booted out not once, not twice, but three times out of various incarnations of this Rolling Stones Cover band that has existed here in Ottawa since 1991 due to his beligerant drunkedness) has cancer, and it's not looking good for him at all. A jam session was held for him yesterday but he was too ill to end up coming. Another former drummer was brought it and we caught it as a 'well wishes' video for the guy. It was a crowded little room with a bunch of guys rotating various combinations - doing all Stones songs

Now back in the day when i first joined the band I was 20 years old. It was 1994 and Voodoo Lounge was in full swing. The other guys in the band at the time were mostly the age that I am now, so I was the 'young pup', the sole Gen X'er.

Now we all age obviously, but seeing the sweat and fervor of the guys plowing through songs at a rapid pace, others thoughtfully anaylizing nodding their heads to the music... I had a bit of clausterphobia. No, I had full-out "get me the F@#$ outta here".

It was an awful experience and I feel almost shell-shocked me of Stones fandom. I certainly don't want to cover any Stones anytime soon. Years of baggage surfacing? Perhaps. But what struck me as the most shocking was how musically insulated all of these guys are from Music That Is Not Associated With The Rolling Stones Or Any Of It's Current Or Ex-Members. Unless of course the odd comment about other material before the late 70's.

The way they would write-off 'modern music' (they still refer to 90's music as current) made my stomach sink. I didn't feel I could relate at all musically to these guys.

It was hard emotionally for all of course, one of our alum is dying. I could never ever put myself through that kind of musical horror show again though, bad versions of old, lame Stones songs that no one cares about isn't a legacy at all. I said early goodbyes and left 2/3 through, missing that drunk drummer that got us barred from 5 clubs on the city. You really can never go home I guess. Wonder if Mick himself has ever felt about The other Stones this way?

Really? You're going to compare yourself and some lame cover band to Mick Jagger and the Stones? Time to get over yourself boyo!
