Come On?

One song that is always neglected in the Stones catalogue is their debut single Come On. I don't think the Stones were too keen on the song at the time but i do feel it is effective in getting across their basic sound.
Maybe they chose this Chuck Berry song as their first single because it was not one of his more familiar hits. Anyway it may not be the Stones at their very best but it's never be performed live by the Stones to my knowledge.
There could not have been a more appropriate time than their fortieth aniversary tour. I think there's very little chance of them performing it live now.

Come was played live in Harrow-on-the-Hill; 06-01-1964 (1st. show)

I quite like Come On. It bounces along and is fairly quirky. I think your right in suggesting that it was picked, as it was one of Berry’s more obscure numbers. In fact, I think it was a fairly recent Berry release at the time.

I really like the b-side too. I want To Be Loved has some nice drumming.

I have the original Decca 45rpm. Shame it's only worth £20 in mint condition.

Sounds a bit silly after 43 years - but would be interesting to hear a "refreshed" live version in 2005/06. Just like "Not fadeaway" which sounded different but nice!

I dunno, always like the Chuck Berry rockers,
but this seemed to have pretty much been a
throw away, not one of his stronger numbers.
Outside of being a nod to some of their roots,
I'd consider it a pretty week choice for a
first single, but that's all moot now.

Its a myth that they never played it in concert - perpetuated by the Stones themselves, one of whom (Mick or Keith) I think said that theyd never performed it.

It was actually played as late as 1965.

The band actually did not like it at all when then single was out in the shops so they dropped it from the gig set list. Then Andrew came to one gig and he then discovered that they DID NOT play the song. He was furious and fired of the guys. "You have made your first single and you don't paly it????????????? How the ***** are you going to promote it???***** You better put it in the set list tomorrow or then****************. So, they had to put it back into the set listsmiling smiley

It's their one Berry cover that sounded amateurish and weak, IMO. Not a great tune to begin with, either. It's best left alone....

Ain't nothing wrong with the battering they give it on the BBC, Saturday Club, September 3, 1963.

I saw Keith and the Winos play Come On at the Henry J Kaiser Auditorium in Decmeber 1988. It was very cool to hear it live!

cool (as long as I'm not too "compromised" - but, then, it WAS in Ireland (sorta). The only one I have is the one shot with help from your wife's headlights - it didn't turn out too well - although I believe I did squat a bit to make you taller!

Not that I don't agree, but how did you even find this, given that it's a 14-year-old thread?!

It was widely available even before its official release on On Air.
