I recently did a job with veteran journalist Michael Wale, which prompted me to pay £2 for his 1972 book Voxpop. In it he interviewed Jim Price and Bobby Keyes. Keyes claims that they recorded an album with Barbara Streisand “in Keith’s basement in the South of France”. This sounds like Exiles-era Nellcote to me.

Am I the last person to discover that Barbara Streisand was hanging out in Keith’s basement? The album involved was apparently called ‘Barbara Joan Streisand’ and was produced by Richard Perry.

Showtunes and Heroin. If it was good enough for Lady Day it was good enough for Babs.

Discogs does not list the recording locaton for this LP, not do any of the Barbara Streisand websites I have been able to find. However Keyes and Price are listed as playing on the LP on the sleevenotes.

Maybe they just did overdubs in the basement ?

Or is Keyes misremembering / winding up Michael ?

She recorded the album in March (before the Farewell Tour), continued to record in April (during the tour)at NYC’s CBS Studios and ended in May, more or less when the group moved to France. The album was issued in September. Most probably, ovedubbings were made between the end of the NYC recording sessions and final mixing (August?). Bye, Luca

Sounds like a euphemism for debauched behaviour. The song Stoney End perhaps? ><

1971 - backing band was all female group "Fanny" with help from Bobby Keys, Jim Keltner, Donald Fagan, Billy Preston, etc
