he seems to play better when no one is "looking", so to speak.

i reckon he could hear himself and his collaborators a lot better in the rehearsal - that usually helps!
anyway this clip is a thing of beauty ... thanks & praises & say hallelujah some more (it feels good! :E)

Good point, with sssoul. The clip was really what we all needed...for various reasons.

Pretty cool to see Keith and Steve Jordan work through the song at the end there. Steve's eyes are glued on Keith.

Yes indeed adrewt, whoever (Jane Rose?) decided to capture some moments of the rehearsal was wise to do so. We see a very relaxed Keith enjoying himself and not worried about "performing." It's amazing how much Keith's playing changes when he's in front of a crowd lately...either it be nerves or just hamming/posing it up...he seems to play better when no one is "looking", so to speak.
I think he is hamming it up live. Trying to fit whatever image people have of him instead of just playing.

That reherseal one is such a beauty. Keith sounds so reflective, relaxed and concentrated solely to the sounds he is making. One can almost feel how he is remembering Brian doing the slide long long long time ago... the song has that original vibe in it - it is not just a great Howling Wolf number, there is more personal in it...

Nicely put Doxa. Good to see Keith enjoying the music. The best I've seen from Keith in ages. This has dignity.

The clip really gives a great insight into Keith's abilities. It's all still there...but buried deep under the "rust" (as we've now labeled it). This clip is miles better than what we've seen and heard from the actual show. It gives me hope that Keith isn't that far gone as we thought...

Spot on, Justin! I was at the show, and this clip is so much better than the actual performance.

Lucky you for actually being there!

After "Learning The Game" from the Austin DVD, this clip right here is probably one of Keith's inspired moments of late...

Thanks for posting these valuable videos.

Never forget Stones always are able to surprise us. The rehearsal is terrific.

It's nice to see Keith playing again but I'm not going to be seduced by the rehearsal video, which some of you seem to have been. If it were a nobody playing that way, you guys would have thought it was bland and mediocre and nothing special. But because it's Keith, we have to act as if it's the performance of the century? No thanks.

That's bull.

You already saw how much crap we gave Keith over his performances within the last week...so don't try to make it appear that Keith has immunity on this board. He most definitely does not. When he lays down a clunker--the board isn't ashamed to call him out on it. When he sits with his guitar and gives us a focused and enthusiastic performance---I give credit where credit is due.

Just because you're misinterpreting all this praise to mean that we all thought Keith whipped out amazing slide work that blew Clapton out of the water...well, that's your problem.

You tell nonsense. On the video we can see that Keith played the slide guitar himself. There is nobody behind the curtains!
The rehearsal is much better than the live performance.

He plays the slide mediocre in this rehearsal clip and LRR isn´t even hard to play.

I don't think anyone's touting the rehearsal footage as "the performance of the century." But you're assertation that if we saw a "nobody" playing that way, maybe in some bar, we'd think it "bland and mediocre" sounds like the typical reaction of someone who misses the point. As blues fan, if I saw some guy in a bar play and sing exactly like Keith does in that clip, I would totally be digging it and thinking, "Ah - this is a guy who knows what the blues are all about." But for those who judge such performances by comparing the technical playing by the "greatest guitar gods in the world" mentality, well - such minds don't get it. Keith here does something he's loved and famous for: simple licks and such, but with something loads of guitar wizards CANNOT do - put it across with heart, soul, and FEELING, and move the listener. Loads of players could play exactly the same things Keith played here, but most of them would just be playing mechanically. It takes a special kind of artist to play something simple and give it feeling and emotion like that. I would be happy to see Keith play like that with the Stones should they tour. Even if he can no longer whip out a Sympathy For The Devil style solo anymore, if he can play in a similar simple bluesy style with that much heart and soul, it would be a treat. Keith has often said that you'll never hear the Stones play as well as they do in an intimate rehearsal with no pressure or distractions. If only they could carry that sense of no pressure and just play with such intimacy when they face the crowds and the spotlights it would be a beautiful thing. That clip was the very definition of "simple" guitar playing but I'd rather listen to that than hear some guitar god play clouds of emotionless gnat notes anyday.

instead of putting down people's valid enjoyment of this footage,
how about seeing what you can do to make the world a more beautiful place?

I wasn't optimistic first just after watchin' the YT video, but as I've stated before in my previous comment, Keith got the point of the blues singers in this rehearsal footage, I'm even wonderin' if after all these years of rockin', it will not be better for him to stop and only sing the blues cos' he has the guts and THE voice for it.
If someone for a kind of blind test, have asked before James Cotton : "Who's that guy playin' and singin' with ya ??? ... he could have answered "Well an old black friend of mine , but note sure who ??? "winking smiley

Blah blah blah... what that clip has is loads of feel, a great group performance. It's pure, something genuine, a vibe which grows and it goes beyond hard or easy to play guitar parts.

If anyone, famous or not, put up a recording featuring the same thing I'd say "hot damn!"

Right on. "He plays the slide mediocre..." "LRR isn´t even hard to play."

The words of another one who doesn't get it. Something doesn't have to be hard to play to be great. Simplicity with feeling is a greater artistic achievement than technical brilliance played with mechanical soullessness. Can the dude who made those comments post a video of himself playing the same thing and make us feel something? Some of the greatest playing in rock and roll is not hard to play but it's the ability to convey feeling that makes it great. Speaking as a guitarist...Satisfaction - very easy. Honky Tonk Women - really easy. JJF - easy as hell. Brown Sugar - easy. But not many people can play it and put it across like Keith. When Keith plucks an open G chord without even touching the fretboard, people don't roar with delight because he's doing something difficult. Simplicity with feeling. Sad that so many people just don't get it..or maybe they can't feel it. Sad for them. Keith is just continuing a tradition he's famous for. Nothing he's played has been extremely difficult to play. It's not the point.

It´s just my opinion and it´s very sad that you don´t get it at all or accept my opinion. I haven´t said that anything he plays is extremely difficult to play. My point is that he plays the guitar really bad these days compared to what he did during Licks and before which in my opinion was the last tour he played great. It´s your problem if you don´t realize that.

rehearsals video is excellent, enjoying it !!!

further, do not expect Keith to play like he used 20 years ago, this is more than fine for his age. still, a lot of soul in it. When he is not posing around, he is the top (same goes for Mick)

Any news on his future solo record that he was supposingly working on last year? He can make a blues record in this style, would be great!

He is the top? Are you joking? I do not expect anything and this has nothing to do with his age, there are people in their 70s and 80s playing better. It has to do with his arthritis and head.

True, his skills might be down due to arthritis,
however, I can not judge his medical condition, I am not a doctor, just a fan (opposed to majority of the posters on this topic, who obviously became specialist in all medical conditions just looking at someone at the screen),

I am aware that his guitar skills can not be compared to even 10 years ago, and that there are players older than him playing much better (Buddy Guy for example, recently seen), and yes, I feel sorry for him, I suppose that this is more difficult for him than for his fans.

the top comment does not apply to his skills at all - I love the man dearly, and see him here down to the earth, enjoying himself, and not trying to act like his stage persona (eg. I am cool mf with a gun and a knife).
The performance is full of emotions and soul, he is trying to give the best obviously under the present conditions, and I do not see any reasons not to accept the way it is and enjoy. That's life, and this is KR in 2012. Semi-retired person, growing lemons, and playing simple blues from time to time. Like it or not. If not, you can always play something from 71-73. I do cool smiley

In reading this thread I've seen roughly two different issues here.

The first concerns that of what to think of Keith's fragile blues man performance as it is. For some that it such a pain to ears, while the others - like me - seem to enjoy it pretty much.

The second issue concerns what we think on the base of it: is that guitar-playing good enough to function in a Rolling Stones show?

Could it be that these two issues are easily confused? To me it looks like that some people only see the whole thing as a sort Keith being tested that for a probable tour (which somehow prevent enjoying teh performance in its own terms) That they just see his showing the condition of his guitar skills. Well, of course, I also see that point. And I admit that I also am rather skeptical in that sense; it is very difficult to imagine how Keith could be able to manage even in any 'acceptable' level as a guitarist, unless they change the whole concept of their shows rather dramatically (I wouldn't count that out). But even if The Stones never play together again - or do that very minimally - I really loved to hear more this 'old semi-retired Keith' in future. There is so much soul and point in his music.
