ever since the Mick took on Commit a Crime and so bravely evoked the Wolf with his phrasing,
i've been pondering what a tricky gig this Hubert Sumlin tribute will be for the vocalists:
at a blues celebration the singers had a vast range of styles from which they could choose what they'd shine at
at a tribute to Hubert Sumlin, you're primarily gonna be singing in the shadow of the Wolf - and that ain't easy.

... not that playing guitar in the shadow of Hubert is so easy! but maybe someone knows what i mean :E

[lighting the incense of swift uploading of a great-quality recording of Keith singing Little Red Rooster]

Before I go to sleep...

I am sorry to have to say that the battery died midway during Keith's Little Red Rooster. I'm not gonna post half a song.

Smokestack Lightning was great fun... Even more guitarists than the White House show the other night.

The truth is that Keith was surrounded by lots of better guitar players, ranging in age from 12 (honest!) to 76 years old. But it's always so great to see and hear him, because my love of the Stones goes way back. Compare that to Clapton, who has retained all or most of his chops.

that's the usual way to deliver that number - half spoken half sung
and the version of the link that the gallant Green Lady provided (thank you! and GilbertsGirl for tryin) does work,
and Keith looks very good indeed

Howlin’ For Hubert – The Apollo Theater, NYC – 24 February 2012

Last night the “Howlin’ For Hubert’ concert took place at the legendary Apollo Theatre in New York. Hubert Sumlin, known for his years backing blues legend Howlin’ Wolf, died on December 4th at the age of 80.
Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Elvis Costello, Jimmie Vaughan, Buddy Guy, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Robert Randolph, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jimmy Vivino and many, many others were there to pay tribute to the late blues guitarist. The show was a benefit for the Jazz Foundation of America.

There were 2 sets:
Set 1
Key to the Highway – EC, acoustic, accompanied by James Cotton (an old Chicago blues harmonica player)
Eric Clapton leaves stage
Followed by musicians from Big Head Todd, David Johansen, Billy Gibbons, and Warren Haynes to some terrific old Chicago blues guys.

Set 2
Keb Mo, Doyle Bramhall II, Doyle Bramhall II with Derek Trucks, Doyle Bramhall II with Derek Trucks & Susan Tdedski, Buddy Guy, Robert Randolph, Gary Clark Jr. -highlights were Doyle Bramhall II, Doyle Bramhall II with Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeski, Shemekia Copeland & Buddy Guy)
EC returns to the stage to accompany Gary Clark Jr.:
Shake for Me – (Gary Clark Jr./ Eric Clapton / Steve Jordan / Willie Weeks) vocals by Gary, great rhythm playing by Eric Clapton and Eric Clapton trading licks with Gary Clark Jr.(Eric enjoys Gary’s playing)
Little Baby – vocals by Eric Clapton (entire house band incl. Jim Keltner plus Gary)
Forty-Four – vocals by Eric Clapton (entire house band incl. Jim Keltner plus Gary)
Going Down Slow – vocals by Eric Clapton, highlight of EC playing, with some guest vocals by Keith Richards (probably unrehearsed and seemingly unanticipated by Eric Clapton)
Eric Clapton leaves stage for Keith Richards
Little Red Rooster – Keith Richards plays acoustic with James Cotton (a bit uneven, but best of Keith playing)
Eric Clapton returns to stage
Spoonful – Keith Richards and Eric Clapton plus James Cotton and band (one of the other highlights)

Encores – more than thirty musicians on stage
Wang Dang Doodle
Smokestack Lightning

Thanks for posting, Schillid. The band - particularly Eric - sounding sweet. Kim Wilson on harp? Strange to see Keith on stage singing with other guitarists. I know he did it with the Stones (You Got The Silver), but not what I would think of if I was imagining him onstage with Clapton. He doesn't seem to know what to do with his hands (not surprising after c.50 years of playing guitar onstage). Great to see him on a stage again.

What was his playing like, though? Quite daunting company for someone whose guitar skills have been taking quite a knock in recent years (on this board anyway).

(...)The good news is that Keith actually picked up a guitar and played it. The bad news is - barely. He was in poor form musically and far outclassed by the rest of the talent on stage including artists 20 years his senior. The lifestyle takes it's toll... Lots of rust. I give him credit for having the courage to get up there and still try to give it his best which he did and I respect him for that. However I will say this - if this is the best he can do musically an extended tour is questionable"

"KEITH was great, but not that great playing.."

Bad news sad smiley

I've got a friend in New York, who was at the gig. He told me, that Keith has played only guitar on 2 songs (Little Red Rooster and Spoonfull). My friend says that the guitarplaying of Keith was bad and full of mistakes.

I think the matter is Keith's suffering of arthritis.
What can we do, if Keith can´t play guitar anymore?
How can the Stones tour without Keith???
