when i first heard marriott it was Itchycoo Park on that pink Immediate label in the States; and I had never seen that label before either.
it opened a huge door for me. I was in High School, I think a Junior, maybe younger 14 or 15 at the oldest; and it slayed me.
it's hard to describe the atmosphere in the mid 60's, well after 65.
Incense was a new thing; i don't think i ever heard a Phase Shifter before;
at least that I could overtly identify; tho had no idea what it was called;
it sounded science fiction and excellent; i could hardly believe it.
I didn't know how excellent all the individual members were or anything
at all about them; not even what they looked like but i was in for sure.
Steve's voice this was alley cat thing; i mean guys like him could
never get a record deal or be a pop star; it was a trebly rasp but bluesy.
we sorta know about that kinda heat from Keith's sharp background harmonies
that shadowed Mick on some of the greatest most impact rock records ever
made; and all that...
...i had zero idea what happened him; i heard about Humble Pie and bought their records and was happy that i did; it was heavy stuff. i mean at the time there were not things that heavy pretty much; and it had impact and freshness even tho so blues based.
it's not mac and ron lane and kenny; that thing was seminal and original sound;
i loved them before Ron; i had 'ogden nut gone flake...'

... anything at all they did i was on it and happy about it; Faces with Ron and Rod immediately snapped my attention tho; even that first record where they were feeling the territory out and not having smash hits and doing the ab incredible run of Faces lps.
i caught em with them live only after Steve had left.
I want to spend more time with this. it's so odd for a fan who lost touch with Steve's career after early Pie, except the sad remote news of his passing away...the small faces were never really big in the States to my memory; i was the only kid who had that record in High School; well not true i got it from an older women; a junior or senior in High School who was one of the odd 'hippie' type chicks; she was beautiful and intellectual and two or three years in High School, especially if you're friends with a girl; is sorta huge; but she was gracious about the crush; her boyfriend was a college man; a mature 18 year old who was also my friend; point is, for me, this was the truly 'hip' stuff; the stuff not likely to get on radio; itchypoo wasn't really a smash hit here but got some play...but i started buying their records; Tin Soldier blew me away and it's been a lifelong thing; very rare a few weeks will go by when i won't listen to Faces; but i think Rod's era, in NO 'SMALL' part to Every other individual member in that rare and truly classic band too, hit me so hard i still go there regularly; this DT stuff is a little hard for me to adjust to cause of past exposure to a different looking and sounding Steve.
I appreciate the thread and Steve's influence on me and his importance in British rock history. I need to learn more about their career pre-Ron and Rod; why Steve left; what acrimony or however that went; excuse me for thinking out loud ;i love this site; no one i know in present day personal life in a meaningful way finds this stuff important or worth knowing but i do.

Great singer. Tragic life.

Great vocalist, indeed. Superb guitarist, too. I’m not sure if his life was considerably tragic, but certainly, a very, very sad ending.

He was amazing in Humble Pie in heyday.
But I had met him a few times in his latter years; and I have to say he was a real @#$%&. I only say this about the brief time I knew him. I think what happens some times is that time moves on, and some people don't change with them. So, only in relation to a new era they begin losing the glow.

It's probably more complex then this, but really it comes down to how you handle fame....and then how you handle the aftermath.
His mate Peter Frampton seems to have coped well...even if the golden years are long past, he has a loyal following and has kept on an even keel.
Marriott, like BJ and so many others seemed to lack that kind of discipline and maturity.

you are disturbing in the most fascinating ways.
i think if we were in the same country we'd likely go to jail together.
i mean, they'd def take us in separate police cars, they're not crazy,
we are, but we like it; they are never gonna get it, or us.
notice the us. i'm trying to emigrate.
so i'm being ingratiating; how's that going?
Do you know any immigration lawyers?
Or girls?
We spend a lot of time on the computer together tho, don't we Rock?
listen, you take care.
drag bushes behind my automobile; gosh i forgot the first insult i deleted
before this slew of new ones where i'm sorta shmoozing; hey, the Stones are coming here man!!!! yesssss. i graduated high school 50 years ago this Spring and the Stones are coming!!!
DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS????
it means hops is fricken older than dirt.
glad to be too.
i got all the stupid out of the way and now get to clear it up here inside of my new better conscious-mundo. some peeps are calling
me Hopsfucious; but not here I noticed; not a soul here.
no one.
i guess the last place they're gonna 'get you' is your home town.
I guess the Boss has written some pretty shitty songs about that.
now he's a fricken politician; so its Broadway.
born to wheeze

on the day we sweat it out on the cots of the local urgent care
we got piles not smiles and miles and miles of liquid from back there
sprung like chickens on highway flat we're fuel injected and shooting stuff
heavier than that
together maggie is that your name we'll run thru the bushes until they say we're insane
baby this town rips the bones from your back then you flop like-a jelly-belly girl where's the sense in that
someday girl i don't know when cause i could take a guess or take a look at your back end
and walk in the sun
cause tramps like you sure know how the hell to jet the job done
come on with me
tramps like you, baby let's do porn for fun

Of all those we lost too soon, Steve Marriott frustrates me the most in terms of what could still have been.

Also, a sort of general thanks for your posts, hopkins, I love reading them (not least because I've had a lot of the same musical experiences). I'll call you Hopsfucious if you like.

Kangaroos are cool... they were watchin'
when Micko strummed those first BS chords...

..drove a water tanker deep into a fire-zone once...
Four of us in the cabin ..fire ..HEAT.. sparks raining
across the road …. out of nowhere a kangaroo with
fur on fire … For a moment it stood there like a burning
spook then just as quickly disappeared back into the flames …..we survived
