The shooter has been arrested. See the BBC news enty:

Dutch shooting: Utrecht police arrest suspect after three killed

As far as I understand, this is a shooter with a criminal record, and it seems like there was a selected target on the tram, with the shooter hitting many others as well.

There are so many nutcases out there in the real world. Thousands kill every year, we all know guns are killing. I am not an expert on terror, but to me this seems like a nutcase with a gun rather than a planned and staged terror attack. We will know more in the news to come.

Whether it is terror or just mad shooting, it is totally unacceptable.

Stay safe wherever you are, Utrecht or other places.

Used to live in Utrecht for almost 15 years. Scary stuff, no matter the motive.

Beautiful city, wonderful people.

Not sure how factual this is as there's conflicting stories, but one scenario I read is he was shooting at a relative over a family dispute, and then others when they came to aid the victim.
Whatever the case, glad they caught the @#$%& dirtbag!

Bad is a matter of degree. If you were injured, or know the dead personally, it was indeed, bad even if the numbers are nowhere NZ.

6 miles down the road ... all is "back to normal". Scary mothers, kids kept inside the schools until picked up by parents (or granddad, me). Panic among mothers, also Muslim mothers!
Indeed it looks like a nutcase, but two more have been arrested, so it remains to be seen if religious fanatism is (partly) an underlying factor. Social frustration is clearly present in that area (know that area from decades ago and saw the changes).
Another sad day on our beautiful globe.

Well like I wrote before, we're waiting (not too anxiously...) for the next attack. It has become the new normal here in Europe...

I think this guy is another looser. Just grab a gun and shoot some people and you are in the news. If the press did not cover these horrible events like the shooters are famous, then they would simply be forgotten in a jail cell. These shooters don't deserve our attention.

However, the victims do of course need all of our support. My thoughs are with everyone in Utrecht and The Netherlands. Nobody deserve the horror of fear and violence.

Love Utrecht. I escaped Amsterdam for Utrecht the weekend after the 9/11 attacks. (11/9 in Europe?) There were no hotel rooms in Amsterdam, which was kind of hectic. There was some sort of pre-planned convention, and a lot of Americans kept their rooms because there weren't available planes yet to go home.
