Saw this online earlier. Knew his name but wasn't quite sure of what he played on. Checked his Wikipedia page and was amazed at all the famous songs, especially from the 60's, that he's played on.

RIP.

RIP Hal. Probably the most recorded drummer of all time.

There's a guy who was all over the radio in mid-60's, and his beat was our collective pulse

In the film The Wrecking Crew it's revealed that his famous bit in this song was him counting time for the rest of the musicians:

Desperately sad to hear about this. He was a great drummer, but from what I have heard, he was a greater man...

Wow, what an incredible legacy. I've seen his name in passing before, but looking at JUST the #1 hits he's played on...mind blowing.

Rest in peace, Hal Blaine.

Like his British contemporaries, Bobby Graham and Clem Clattini, he drumming can be heard on so many of those wonderful 60’s recordings.

Such an accomplished career. He lived a long life but still sad to see such an influence gone. In the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a side man. His work as part of the Wall of Sound gets him in alone. I think he played on consecutive Grammy Record of the Year - something like 5 in a row? Who else can say they recorded with Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, Elvis all in there prime??

Amazing....RIP

Here's a longer (and most likely incomplete) list of albums he played the drums on.

A true legend

I own his autobiography. There's not a lot to it, but there are a few interesting stories. He had a good sense of humor. I enjoyed his work on the Beach Boys' Smile sessions comedy bits. He was also a very influential drummer (one of Keith Moon's favorites).

I knew the name but never realised the amount of great stuff he played drums on over so many years.

A true legend and influence, as well as sounding like he was a great guy

You lived to a great age Hal, and you certainly deserve to Rest in Peace.

A Master. seeming almost effortless,
and perfect.
I've watched those films of him in the studio with Brian Wilson many times
over the years. I'm boning up a lot of his interviews.
what a lovely man, very respectful of the artists...
it would be ez for him to crap on the Raiders and the players he 'covered' for,
and all that, but he keeps talking of the achievements of the artists he worked for....
....talking about Paul Simom; you see Hal's kindness and respect for these 'kids'....using that 'genius' word. the history here is so enormous.
his work will truly ever die.
imagine doing sessions for his friend Frank Sinatra; and Nancy...
it's really remarkable how much of his propulsive tasteful fills ,
and solid Beat, distinguish these Hits that are almost part of our DNA.
i listened to that Byrds session over and over.
most wouldn't want to and i don't even recommened it;
but tor me, it's a holy pleasure and a world of useful information.
brilliant and so downhome humble.
his stories are believable. a real precious soul this cat.
RIP

Nothing to add, really, obviously a great drummer and seemingly a great guy, too.

It seems likely that the drummer Hal Blaine—who died on Monday, at age ninety, of natural causes, at his home, in Palm Desert, California—has done more to quicken my heartbeat than any other American musician. By his own estimation, he played on more than six thousand songs as a member of the Wrecking Crew, aGood Vibrations,” that eager on-the-four snare at the start of the Ronettes’ “Be My Baby,” the drums on Elvis Presley’s “Return to Sender,” the theme from “Batman,” Frank Sinatra’s “Strangers in the Night,” Sam Cooke’s “Another Saturday Night,” The Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man,” The Monkees’ “Mary, Mary,” and Barbra Streisand’s “The Way We Were”—it’s all Blaine. Brian Wilson recently called him “the greatest drummer ever.” He is so unquestionably essential to the last half century of American popular music—to the national condition—that it almost feels as though his face should be on currency.."
