" What's it like being the best guitarist in the world ?"

Jimi Hendrix

Did Hendrix ever really say that?

Yes .

I don't recall the time or exact words...but it's been well documented.

I'm sure it was an off the cuff remark... not intended to be taken literally...

...but it does indicate just how much esteem Rory was held in by his peers at the time of Taste & his early Solo career

The trouble is I've that quote refer to other guitarists and an identical quote from Clapton about Prince. I've never seen an actual quote with any credibility. That doesn't mean it never happened I just haven't seen proof.

I do remember well a qoute by Rory about Keith Richards.

He said that he rates Keith very high as a guitarist - especially Keith's feeling.

I attended one of the shows of the Top Priority Tour, great memories.
Bad Penny was one of the highlights.
I recall he was very humble with the public and also very close.
Great guitar player.

Why he couldn't be a Stone?

His shirt.

I love all the Taste and Rory Gallagher albums, Rory was an amazing guitarist and had his own style. Rory Gallagher: Paint It Black (Mont De Marsan 1985) [youtu.be]

Rory in Ireland, and In Europe, are two great albums from the 1970s.

I think, like Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton, he wouldn't have been a Stone. He was just way too individual to be subsumed within the Stones. Ronnie, with the benefit of hindsight, was the perfect match. However, if Ronnie was selected in 1969, I don't think he'd be alive today.

Probably because Rory wouldn't have stayed as long as Ronnie was able to stay with the Rolling Stones. And music a little to do with it.Like Mick and Keith have said they needed somebody who was able to hang with them.

fricken brilliant; top of the heap for real.
just amazing. love this cat so much;
i sorta frequently post his jam with Frankie Miller doing Berry stuff.
he's just so flipping amazing; lead poster ab correct, Stones couldn't
contain them; they shouldn't have wanted or needed to; if we were project
that he was ever a candidate. i don't know enough about Rory's bio or career,
but I do go for his Tracks frequenly. thanks for posting this blistering workout; check out his around and around with frankie miller too.

here he's doing chuck; for sure he could give jagger a rockin' good time on the dance floor at the drop of hat. bill would have ate this stuff up.
his lead starts about 2:30 of so...oh my goodness feast with the gracious gift of rock and roll guitar greatness...

Heh heh. This thread never had a chance, what with that title and the worst possible clip of Rory: a drunk Rory goofing around (although he had few nice moments that night in Montreux - great acoustic OOTWP).

Not helping the topic is the very second post with that famous internet "Hendrix quote". Haw haw.

Remember the first version? "Jimi said it in 1969 on the Cavett show".
Then the Hendrix-Cavett DVD came out with both his performances in full. No sign of that quote.

Then all of a sudden it was: "Jimi said it in 1969 on the Tonight show".
Then the complete audio showed up ( [www.youtube.com] ). Nothing.

Then the next (and last version?): "Jimi said it in 1969 to some reporter after leaving the stage at Woodstock". Yeah, that will work! No audio or video this time around.

Anyhow, love Rory to bits. First time I heard his mandolin masterpiece "Going to my hometown", I went to the music store and bought the damn instrument.
He played only once in my hometown, in 1985 - alas, I was 7 at the time, but my older friend went and got his notebook signed by Rory and other band members:

I saw Rory in the mid 80's at a show in Orleans, France. Rory was a blue collar type a rock and roller. That night he broke 2 strings while playing on stage; that didn't stop him. He kept playing pulling on the broken strings to get them out the way. While still playing he quickly tuned up in open tuning. A roadie came next to him , Rory is still playing. The roadie rapidly put in the 2 strings. Rory still playing tuned up the 2 strings and finished the song. @#$%& unbelievable but true.Miss Rory.

I was in the front row. Stunning player, too much of a player to be a Rolling Stone only. A true maniac.

Thanks for the great anecdote, dude. It was this concert, right?

Your string busting story reminded me of this video from Vienna 1978;

At 2:18 min, he removes one string... at 2:52 min, there goes the second... and by the end of the song, at 3:45 min, the main mando riff is unrecognizable. Still cool, tho!

Love Rory, but his love for extensive soloing and hyperactive stage antics would have never fitted the Stones. I'm not convinced that Rory would have been able to restrain himself nor that even if he could, it would have been a satisfying experience in the long run for him.

Some fans here (not me, of course!) already complained about Taylor's supposedly "extensive noodling" in live performances, wonder what they would have said about Rory doubling or even tripling that!

It is simply out of imagination of Rory bein a Stone. He was a solo artist so neither he nor the Stones would have any advantage. Same goes for Eric Clapton, btw.
