Sunday Night At The London Palladium (January 1967)
Posted by: johnnythunders ()

I am hoping the massive collective knowledge of iorr can help me with some questions:
1. When Keith sang Connection was it the first time he had sung a lead vocal in public?
2. The arrangement of Its All Over Now is completely different to any other version I have heard (Jagger sings a different melody line ). Did they perform it like this anywhere else?
3. The tracks I have heard on YouTube and elsewhere are reasonable but not brilliant quality. Has anyone ever heard a high quality recording?
4. Did anyone here watch these tracks being broadcast in real time? Any memories?

Thanks in advance

This rendition of "It's All Over Now" was recorded in the studio and only was broadcast only once.

There's a vague possibility that a video of the performance may still exist, in this article from NME Mick says that Paul Asher recorded it on what would have been an early video tape recorder.

Bill Wyman says in "Rolling With The Stones" that the backing tracks were specially recorded at Olympic as they did not trust the live sound at the Palladium (probably correctly)

Only for IAON.

The other songs are just the album backing tracks minus vocals.

It's very hard to overstate how much FUSS was created by The Stones not going on the turntable at the end of the show.

Immense.

Times have changed.

I detect some r&b/funkiness here!
I don't recall ever hearing this, but might have it on an old boot somewhere in the stash.

I remember watching it live on TV. I was so excited when they didn’t do the carousel thing at the end—I’d been a bit concerned about them doing this corny show, and the drama and rebellion at the end totally reassured me that they were still bad boys. grinning smiley

A cool thread, thank you!

Totally forgotten the 'alternative version' of "It's All Over Now". Sounds awesome, a brilliant version. An interesting idea by the band back then. Since they recorded the backing track in Olympic Studios, there must be a clean version of it somewhere. And most likely having Jagger's original vocals in it, too. Oh man, would be wonderful to hear that. But since we know ABKCO & The Stones love affair, better just to forget it... besides, it belongs to Public Domain now in UN.

So did Keith really sang "Connection" solo at the London Palladium? Seeing that would be a threat too. What other songs did they perform there that night besides those two? "Let's Spend The Night Together"?

Bill Wyman in ROLLING WITH THE STONES doesn't mention "It's All Over Now" being performed (he lists "Let's Spend The Night Together", "Ruby Tuesday" and "Connection"). By the way, Bill claims that it was Paul McCartney indeed who video-taped the show for Mick and Keith and they watched it at Peter Asher's place. So is it Mick just making fun of Keith Ahlman in that NME interview ("Paul Asher")?

There are two version that I know of (studio recordings no audience) of 67 "It's All Over Now" Jagger on vocals but one is without the guitar solo the other is with the guitar solo. There is also studio version (for 67 TV show) but without Jagger on vocals for Connections. The other two tracks I would have to check.

It's been a long while. I believe the video of the show still exist in B/W.

Love that version. Shame there’s not a better sounding recording of it.

The London Palladium "It's Over Now" is out there in perfect sound. The collector isn't sharing it.
