Fictional compilation LIVE THROUGH THE DECADES
Posted by: saltoftheearth ()
Date: January 20, 2012 16:20

If the Rolling Stones would decide to compile a multi-CD-box of unreleased live recordings named LIVE THROUGH THE DECADES, with complete individual songs from all decades only spliced together, and they'd ask their fans:

Which song would you propose and like to hear on that album?

My selection would be

Salt of the earth (Atlantic City 1989)

Boy, this would have the potential to be a fantastic compilation....but SO SO hard to select what should be on it. There's so many great performances to choose from....

Another thought: What about a compilation from their "official" live albums? That would also be hard to choose for.

As for a compilation from the official live albums...I would skip Got Live If You Want It, start with Ya Ya's and go forward, trying to sequence it like an actual concert that progresses through the decades...
FROM YA YA'S:
JUMPING JACK FLASH
STRAY CAT BLUES
HONKY TONK WOMEN
LOVE IN VAIN
MIDNIGHT RAMBLER

FROM LOVE YOU LIVE
IF YOU CAN'T ROCK ME / GET OFF OF MY CLOUD
HOT STUFF
HAPPY
STAR STAR
AROUND AND AROUND
IT'S ONLY ROCK AND ROLL

FROM STILL LIFE
UNDER MY THUMB
LET'S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER
TIME IS ON MY SIDE

FROM FLASHPOINT
RUBY TUESDAY
YOU CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT
PAINT IT BLACK
SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL

FROM STRIPPED
LIKE A ROLLING STONE
DEAD FLOWERS

FROM NO SECURITY
GIMME SHELTER
LIVE WITH ME
SISTER MORPHINE
OUT OF CONTROL

FROM LIVE LICKS
MONKEY MAN
CAN'T YOU HEAR ME KNOCKING?
BEAST OF BURDEN
WHEN THE WHIP COMES DOWN
ROCK ME BABY
STREET FIGHTING MAN

FROM SHINE A LIGHT
SHATTERED
SHE WAS HOT
ALL DOWN THE LINE
JUST MY IMAGINATION
START ME UP
SATISFACTION

Pretty Thing, Jaguar & Thunderbird, Don't Lie to Me, Our Little Rendezvous,
Baby What You Want Me to Do (aka You Got Me Running), Brown Eyed Handsome Man
and Hey Crawdaddy

(the man said unreleased, right?)

oh and if i'm only allowed one: Baby What You Want Me to Do

Just for fun and my own enjoyment...a playlist I could put on my mp3 player or burn a CD for enjoyment in my car...just for fun..It's only rock and roll...and I like it!

OK, that explains it. I never see the fun of compilations, myself, when I'm listening to an album, and especially a live album, I want to hear as much as possible from that concert/era, without jumping 5 years in time all of a sudden. And could the difference be bigger than 60s/70s Rolling Stones than Rolling Stones from 1990 onwards? By the way, you forgot about their 2nd best live album; Some Girls Live In Texas.

Not the version from the original Brussels Affair bootleg (afternoon show) which is a true classic in Stones live bootlegs. Couldn't imagine a Stone live anthology without this one.
