the core of this new van halen tune was written 35 years ago during the time when most people considered van halen the be all end all of the new rock scene. not sure how a song that probably won't get much airplay is "mainstream"?

what is wrong with the way DLR moves? he has like 5 black belts in various martial arts disciplines. just for that he can move however he wants or he may come kill anyone who disagrees

From Billboard:

"Tattoo," the lead single from Van Halen's Feb. 7 comeback album with David Lee Roth, "A Different Kind of Truth," the band's first since 1984's "1984" to feature Roth on lead vocals, blasts onto Rock Songs at No. 16. The song arrives with 4.6 million first-week audience impressions on 78 stations, according to Nielsen BDS.

Hot Shot Debut No. 16 "Tattoo" Van Halen

Pretty solid open for Van Halen's "Tattoo". Their album's pre-sales have been very solid as well. They have been in both Amazon's and I-tunes top ten since the day you could pre-order the record and we are still weeks away from it's debut which could top the charts.

Their new single entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #67 this week, not bad at all.

From what I've read, "insiders" say there are several songs that are better than this on the album. Not a bad song but not great. Seems to be lots of hype for the album and tour. Since I'm a huge VH fan, I'd like to see the album enter the charts at #1.

Better than expected. I like it better than the Boss Springsteen new tune posted here.

*** FANTASTIC SONG ***

What you need to do to correct your first impression is 2 things:

*Watch the video full screen (do not multi-task while viewing. Give it your full attention)

*Turn up the volume. The compression is not there if you have good speakers. Your laptop speakers or $30 speakers are not designed for the way rock & roll is recorded these days. Crank it !

The best moment of the video is at the end of the main guitar solo, David is walking behind Ed and start up the next verse while Eddie's guitar is still echoing the last note.

Now...call me CRAZY...but my ears pick up some "Mick Jagger" vocal phrasing that Mick uses at the end of "Harlem Shuffle".

It's not a good song.

That "Swapmeet Sally" and "Mousewife to Bombshell" phrase (or whatever it is) is cringe sort of stuff.

The song hasn't got much in it.

A basic verse and then that "Swapmeet Sally" crap and then Tatoo Tattoo.

Ed's playing is ok but not great by his standards and his tone sounds nothing like the early days.

I just played Tattoo for my wife to hear and she said she'd run around the block to screw a stranger for AC/DC over anything VH ever did. She doesn't like VH at all.

So, if you get tickets for the show, make sure you get there early to see Kool & the Gang! (at least in L.A.)
...oh, wait a minute, I'm skipping it this year.

Yeah... uh, no. I am at a loss about that pairing. What are they thinking?

Kool and gang finishes with "Celebrate" or something.... and that is what
they think will get the crowd pumped for.... uh... no. They would have been
smarter to pick some new up and coming band/someone.... to draw the kids...
then again... who knows what they are thinking?

Here's a live version (audio only) of "Down in Flames" from the first tour in 1978. It was going to be on the 2nd album, but the only part of this song that survived (until now) was the intro, which became the into to "You're No Good." The video uses an unrelated 1978 promo video.

i've heard all 4 of these songs that are floating around plus i already knew the one they performed live at cafe wha??. so i know 5 of these songs on this new album and so far none of them are as good as "me wise magic" or "can't get this stuff no more"

Re: OT: here is the new VAN HALEN single

I've heard them as well and they sound like what they really are, leftover ideas that were not good enough to make the earlier albums in the first place.

DLR seems to be really adding the Cheese element in these new? songs.

His lyrics and delivery are often just awful.

Ed's playing is good but different and it seems to be more conventional and restrained.
Ed's tone is just his more modern tone.

Wolfgang is pretty good on Bass and Alex is there.

The fanboys will buy this new stuff just because it's new but really there is not much in this new stuff as compared to the earlier stuff.

I've seen some fanboys really brainwashing themselves to like the newer stuff by playing the songs hundreds of times and they say at first I wasn't too impressed but after a hundred plays it's great.

Great songs hit the first time IMO like JJF and Brown Sugar.

out of the 5 songs total songs i know are on the i think 2 are strong and the rest do do much for me. like i said though even the strong songs aren't as good as "me wise magic" or "can't get this stuff no more"
