Loving cup is one of the few guest spots that I like.
Setlist of SAL is superb. Unfortunately mostly bad played, but there are real pearls, for example AS TEARS GO BY is pure gold...

I sort of liked the first few albums by the White Stripes back when they were first released - they were punky, edgy, and fresh....stripped down and raw
But for the most part, Jack White has become unlistenable since then, and to see and hear him sabotage the Stones classic was a bit insulting - surprised they left it in the film and album.

Live Licks I’ve never owned but got to listen to it once while shopping in a funky store (Nakano Broadway) in Tokyo. I was impressed by some of the rare cuts but not enough to run to the record store. Studio versions are vastly superior - you either get that or you don't.

I saw Shine A Light in a theatre but all I remember is the cringeworthy opening sequence where Scorsese is fretting about the setlist (to Jagger’s feigned delight) and the promise I made to myself to never watch it again. It is a promise I can keep.

I don’t blame Scorsese though. If he can’t make a cool and sexy film about the Stones nobody can.

I don’t blame the Stones either – it’s all down to Father Time. I don’t wanna watch geezers rocking out on film – simple as that. (Now going to see them live for kicks and as part of a nostalgia fest with friends is a different story…please understand.)

I think a sex tape analogy, though crass, might illustrate my point more effectively. Let’s say a sex tape featuring Mick and Jerry Hall from the mid seventies were to suddenly find its way to market. I don’t mind admitting that’s something I’d pay to view. However, if, for old time’s sake shall we say, Mick were to give Jerry the dong in 2020 and unbeknownst to him his bodyguard filmed the encounter I can assure you I wouldn’t download it (or maybe I would be but I would definitely stop watching before the climax).

Does that analogy bring it home for anyone? The Stones released some fantastic music in their day but the image they projected was just as important to their popularity and cultural impact (in this they differ from the Beatles somewhat). The elegantly wasted, hedonistic sex gods who created those classic songs are no more. That’s OK of course – that’s the way of this world but for me the songs aren’t the same unless they’re played by the gods who created them. So while I’d still like to shake Keith’s withered hand and go to a show once in a while I’m not going to watch geezers perform pathetic renditions of my favorite songs on TV.

For me, the SAL soundtrack is simply superb. Not one of their best performances, fair enough, but it has lots of soul and it grooves like a bitch. I can easily listen to Ya Ya, Brussells, Texas AND SaL all in a row, and receive from all of them exactly the same satisfaction....

Nice to know I'm not the only one....smileys with beer

AMEN, SAL is great, just avoid the half a tone pitched DVD (although ADTL and SWH are freakin' great with the pitched up treatment) as Jagger sounds a bit cat-like. It's Only Rock n Roll and it's mighty fine boys and girls! smileys with beer

Curiously enough it's only the European DVD that is pitched half a tone. Hence the songs are a bit faster and Jagger sounds rather cat-like on some tunes. (ADTL and She Was Hot actually sound better IMHO, almost Bruxelles Affair-esque). Bluray's fine everywhere smileys with beer

The reason is the often blamed PAL system.
