Now, Claudine's back in jail again, Claudine's back in jail again
Claudine's back in jail again, Claudine
Claudine's back in jail again, Claudine's back in jail again
She only does it at weekends, Claudine
Now, only Spider knows for sure, but he ain't talking about it any more
Is he, Claudine?
There was blood in the chalet, blood in the snow
She washed her hands of the whole damn show, Claudine
She shot him once right through the head, she shot him twice right through the chest
Judge ruled it was an accident, Claudine, accidents will happen
Well, Claudine's back in jail again, Claudine's back in jail again
Claudine's back in jail again, Claudine
Claudine's back in jail again, Claudine's back in jail again
Claudine's back in jail again, Claudine
Yeah, poor Claudine, poor Claudine
Claudine's back in jail again, Claudine's back in jail again
Claudine's back in jail again, Claudine
Poor Claudine, poor Claudine, poor, poor, poor Claudine
Now, I threaten my wife now with a gun, but I always leave the safety on
I recommend it, Claudine
Yeah, pistol whip me once or twice, never ever try to take my life
What do you think about that, Claudine
Claudine's back in jail again, Claudine's back in jail again
She only does it at weekends, Claudine
Poor Claudine, poor Claudine, poor Claudine
What about your children, Claudine, poor, poor children
You're the prettiest girl I've ever seen, only see you on the movie screen
I hope you never try to make a sacrifice of me, Claudine
Don't get, don't get too trigger happy with me, Claudine, itchy fingers
Yeah, Claudine's back in jail again, Claudine's back in jail again
Claudine's back in jail again, Claudine
Yeah, Claudine's back in jail again, Claudine's back in jail again, Claudine
Claudine, poor, poor, poor, poor Claudine

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

I always prefer the rough early version ,...sooo cool !
The country version is OK ,..but will never come close to the "rock" version ,..
at least for me ,...

In my opinion the weakest track on Deluxe. I prefer the 7 minutes long version with some interesting licks from RW, which is slower and not as boring as the Deluxe version. Further on the official track the guitars are too much in the background. An example for that a raw early version can be better than the polished official one.

To me this is a fun track but nothing extraordinary. It's got a nice groove to it and some dryly funny lyrics ("I always leave the safety on!"...), and the sound was spruced up nicely for the SG Deluxe release.

I'm glad it wasn't included on ER; I think ER's tracks are stronger than this.

I've never understood how people think this song is so great. It's just some average thing they tossed off that's quite boring really.

hm: looks like this thread got overwhelmed by its proximity to the holidays -
it seriously needs to be linked to this other one that got more developed: [www.iorr.org]

on page 460 of Rolling with the Stones Bill writes: "Keith's number about [Claudine Longet] was deemed too explicit for release."
that sure sounds like he means it was Keith who came up with the lyrics as well as the music - isn't that interesting

it was great until it was officially released. let this be a lesson to you other still-in-the-vault songs. be wary of what you ask for.

The released version sounds fine to me. It is not a great song and I can see why it was not released in 1978 or 1980 Claudine Longet just may have sued the boys for libel afterall I beleive she was aquitted.

no, she was found guilty of negligent homicide and given a prison sentence
that she was allowed to serve on days of her choice. the lyrics tell the story pretty accurately.

and the released version sounds more than fine to me

It is. The lyrics with that nasty wit so naturally suits to Mick's mouth, but then again, it could be the case that the one on the band who might find shooting accidents and things like that fascinating, funny and inspiring can not be no one else than Richards, especially after reading LIFE...

But I love it. Great rock-a-billy shuffle, or whatever it is. A nice groove. And, of course, great lyrics! They work goddamn well even just read in the paper.

No. She wouldn've sued them and said "That's it? Is this the best you can do? I don't think so. Not even close." She would've sued them for misrepresentation!

Overrated beyond recognition. Still it has a nice groove. Could almost be something off Exile.

Great song just wish it was finished and released on Some Girls.

Cause only a spider knows for sure, but he ain't talking about it anymore, is he Keith?

uh, yeah. be pretty weird of the stones to write a song about longet "back in jail" if she wasn't found guilty.

One of their worst songs.Tasteless and boring.

Boring? Perhaps, but with a swaggering hypnotic groove and a nice buildup w/ Mick's vocals.
Tasteless? ... LOL, you're a fan of a band that wrote Under My Thumb, Brown Sugar, Stray Cat Blues, Live With Me, Star Star - and many others, and criticize this track as tasteless?

Maybe "tasteless" is about the instrumentation, not the subject? Are those songs tasteless?

The 'rock' version or 'first version' isn't much better than the official release but at least it moves around. If it was edited down to 3 or 4 minutes it might be more interesting.

I love the rockabilly version. Great groove and dynamics especially when Charlie comes in with the snare. Cool lyrics but understandable why it wasn't released earlier back in the day.

Absolutely brilliant track. Great guitars! The bootleg versions are all superior to the released version though.

Chris Kimsey was really surprised they didn't release it as, according to him, the band absolutely loved it.

One of the all-time great unreleased tracks for so many years. I first heard it on a bootleg titled "Claudine." It is one of those fantastic narrative songs that captures the story in a rollicking couple of minutes, with a bonus verse of advice:
Now I threaten my wife with a gun
But I always leave the safety on
I recommend it, Claudine

Great stuff. Check out the SNL sketch from back in the day called the Claudine Longet Invitational. I think SNL did get sued and issued an apology.
