Has anyone ever complained that an album was not brickwalled enough?
They are trying to pass a law in the States to stop this.
Same in Europe I believe.
A bit simplistic...but I share the sentiment.
It's a symptom of the recording industry's bias towards the lowest common denominator. Everything is compressed and "brickwalled" to optimise it for playback on poor quality, low resolution equipment.
CD killed folks' aspirations with regard to rewarding reproduction of music in the home...and it's been down hill ever since.

A "brickwall" refers to the image of sound with no peaks or valleys, just a maximized loud sound - square like a brick (see this 1:54 video)

This sounds like a Receiver that has a "Loudness" button turned on.
In regard to the video clip, isn't that what happens to a track when you convert it to mp3?

It's really what happens during commercials on tv. The maximum volume level remains the same, but when the sound is compressed (in terms of volume), very loud remains very loud, loud become almost very loud, medium becomes loud... So the average sound level is much higher to the ears.
As a result, a lot of the breathing and fine nuances of the original are lost. Like a conversation where everyone would be shouting all the time.
