I actually prefer this live to the studio version on Some Girls, which is weird because generally I don't think the Some Girl's sound translates well live.

It is really great to have this cover song- after spending the 70s exploring reggae, disco, and mediocrity, they went all the way back to Motown and did it well. Nice touch on an album that is otherwise obsessed with sounding current and relevant.

The rockers did, imo, although this one was taken down a notch energy-wise and extended in concert. I also prefer the live versions. The Hampton version is as good as any of their peaks.

Agreed. Hampton performance as we all know is awesome.

Still Life version is on the same level. This is one my favorite albums. The arrangement and flow of album suits well for a drive around town with windows rolled down and sound blaring.

I just watched this video and forgot how they nailed it. I am now going to Crag's List and purchase the Hampton concert.

Don't like the Some Girls version at all, pretty weak. Love the live versions.

Wasn't there some goofy group in the 70s called "Men that Wear Hats"?

A waste of space on SOME GIRLS but excellent on STILL LIFE.

The studio version is weird - it's a good version performance wise etc, there's nothing really wrong with it but it basically defines what's wrong sonically with SOME GIRLS, it doesn't have any balls, so maybe if it was mixed better it would be better.

One of their best covers (both studio and live), and an integral part of Some Girls - at least it is for me as that entire album was ingrained in my brain start to finish when it was released in '78.
That said, the Temptations' original is superior imo - nothing comes close to the melancholy vibe of that tune. The Stones turned it into a full blown circus, while the Temptations' version keeps it solemn and prayer like.

It sounds good when it eventually takes off on Some Girls, imo. It is the more subtle parts that sound kind of brutal and harsh. Too trebly.

But the "run away, run away..."-parts towards the end sound great, imo.

The front part of the song, right from the beginning, is just so wonky sounding. As it gets going it does sound better but unfortunately that's just how SG sounds overall. Which worked great for radio - Miss You, BOB and Shattered sound great on radio thanks to the massive compression of FM radio.

Ernie's sax holds the Hampton live version together. Keith is all hit and miss. Sometimes unbearable to listen to on solos. And don't forget Bill's bass.

I agree. But what's weird is how awesome ER (the whole album) sounds, especially after the tinniness of SG. What's the story behind that? Was it a conscious decision on the Stones part to improve the production?
