I wonder if the rumors about Justin performing tonight with a Prince hologram are true.

"Mick and the lads came to kick ass. They got down to business with just
three songs: "Start Me Up," "Rough Justice" and the inevitable "Satisfaction."
Bonus points for not playing "You Got Me Rockin'," which they inexplicably
did as half their set at the 12/12/12 benefit concert. As Mick joked before
"Satisfaction," "This one we could have done for Super Bowl I." Even so,
the man was in better shape than most of the NFL players
– wiggling all
over the stage, shaking mad hips, Mick had his backfield in motion. The
network censored the line "You made a dead man come," understandably.

From Sheila E:

Family, I spoke w/Justin 2nite and he shared heartfelt words of respect for Prince & the Purple fans. I look 4wrd 2 seeing what I’m sure is going 2 be a spectacular halftime show. There is no hologram

Do guys even watch the halftime show? I had assumed that was just to try to get a female viewing audience.

I'd go Prince #1 & U2 #2. It's close though. Stones definitely top 10, along with Bruce, Paul & Tom Petty. Pros. The current trend of pop stars is tiresome. They really need to get Metallica, Pearl Jam & Foo Fighters. Back to rock. They are forgetting who their fan base is.

I wish they had the local college marching bands like they did at the beginning of super bowls.

They are running out of acts. Might be a good idea.

Agreed. Prince was the best, and U2 was a close second. U2 was the right tone but Prince was all around fun, AND I think made better because its the one time Prince showed up and was the Prince everyone wanted which helped. Those two transcended just being "dad rock". All the others were very good (Bruce, Petty, Stones, Macca, Who) but I'd argue didn't do anything spectacular. They managed to not embarrass themselves, put on kick ass shows for what it was, and entertained (the Who maybe least so). I feel its hard to rank any of those over the other.

I predict todays will be the worst.

Surprised Elton ever done the half time show...seems right up his alley.

From what I recall Bruno Mars was pretty good - not a fan, but he brought out the Red Hot Chili Peppers towards the end.

The Stones were far from the best and the only thing that stands out really is the stage they used.

I highly doubt today's will be the worst. Can't be worse than Black Eyed Peas which was borderline unwatchable. And for all the praise Madonna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga are getting on that list, they hardly did anything special. I'd be truly shocked if those one isn't on par with those. Don't have to be a fan of Timberlake but he's a professional. Most probably won't care here, but he did a medley several years ago on Jimmy Fallon's show that was surprisingly great and what I expect to be similar to tonight:

I'm not a fan, but I feel like he's a solid performer and that this worked well. Should have ended 7 minutes in, but he's got more hits now to pad it out. I'd be shocked if he sucks.

Stones were Number 1.
They killed it.
Black leather boys.
Huge tongue-curtain un-covers, several hundreds of dancing fans.
Great stage design; stripped down feel to it...
they played Rough Justice, and it sounded savage...
it was beautiful.
it was great.
i needed it bad that night.
i was waaaay up in the snowy cold mountains, wayyy up small towns and villages....
the bar was packed and everyone was drinking too much...
on purpose...it was supah in every way; the night glowed....
everything was super loud, everyone from two towns was there....old and young...
i sat there wondering what would happen.
it was just so great, hot rocking; it was super.
i mean, it was super ; it was the best.
unless they can bring Nina Simone or James Brown back from the grave or something, I couldn't give two shits what happens at half-time...
i'm gonna use that time to party hearty ....
the stones at the superbowl....short sweet beautiful deadly wonderful
number 1.

Not here to debate the merits of Justin Timberlake - was just giving an opinion on how I think todays performance will rank.
Yet you felt the need to give a full on endorsement in his favor...yawn.

Maybe Zeppelin will do it in your head for their 50th.

I'm waiting till Robert Plant retweets this:

Maybe Justin Timberlake will fill in for Robert Plant for a Led Zeppelin reunion - I'm sure you'd be happy with that!
Meanwhile, Robert Plant is regurgitating old Zeppelin songs to small crowds everwhere.

Justin should do a Zep medley.
Everyone's happy.
Always a solution.
See?
That's why I'm known to be so postive in a lot of places....

I like Pink. What's the deal with her and this today?
Her or Gaga was gonna sing the Anthem? Someone's got a throat condition or something>?

Not a fan, but generally like JT.
Really hope they scratch(ed) the reported Prince hologram though, the negative backlash from the rumor of it is already building.

Fly Eagles fly.

I don't know - last year was Lady Gaga.

Pink deserves better than being misaligned with Justin Timberlake though imo.
Hope she's not sick, otherwise this will be lamer than it already was going to be.

Supposedly she has the flu. As do half the Eagles reportedly. Hopefully she's still able to sing. She's great and would do a good job.

It seemed like the sentiment around here at the time was that the sound was bad. I thought it was a great performance, really raw. I remember Mick saying something like, "we actually did it live, unlike everybody else, which may have been a mistake in retrospect". Apparently there was some internal debate about that beforehand, incredibly. I suspect these shows have to be so tight and choreographed that they aren't exactly "live" soundwise.

So it's hard to put everything on a level playing field (pardon the pun) if most of the acts are basically miming.

I like Pink, too. Not exactly my kind of music but the lady can definitely sing. She seems pretty real, at least in interviews, too. Hope she gets past her flu for the anthem.

Well, I didn't really know the songs except vaguely for one or two, but the Justin Timberlake show was fantastic. Perhaps there is too much cynicism around here. Even the large projection of Prince was well done and in good taste.

It just goes to show you how truly great America is when it comes to putting on a show. And there is no political connotation to that statement. They just put on the most amazing grandiose and fantastic shows and this goes all the way back to the musicals from the 1940s and 1950s.

It was just awesome and so full of life and colour and excitement and great ideas and and great choreography and great scene changes and good but not over-the-top special effects.

Agreed.

Not my music, but very well crafted, with real musicians.
