Charlie's best numbers?
Posted by: DiscoVolante ()

It may be hard since Charlie's not the drum solo kind of drummer. He's cool, it's all about the beat, that pushes the music, that defines the Rolling Stones. So what is the coolest drummers most tasteful performance?

The count-in beat during the intro of Gimme Shelter gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. It's so brilliant in its simplicity!

And then we have the burst in 100 Years Ago.

Also the intro beats of Honky Tonk Woman and Let it bleed and the 4 on the floor beat of Miss You are worth mentioning.

Mercy, Mercy, Let the good times roll- Sam Cooke and of course, one of the greatest Stones tracks for me, Fortune Teller all have great percussion. The drums on Fortune Teller are so mod, make the song, the Who did that song too but the Rolling Stones version is fabulous.

GYYY'S - Sympathy, he gets some amazing beats on that small kit.
Brussels - YCAGWYW. Love the interplay with Keith and Taylor

Where the Boys go is a great performance, and a great sound.
I very much love what he did on "Memory Motel"; the second verse - are you kidding? That is drums played as an instrument, not as a beatbox.

I always found some of the best recorded drumming from Charlie is on YaYa's.
Back in the 60's on those old mono radios/rec.players the intros to GOOM Cloud and HTW came over really great!

Well, I'll agree with that, but his best playing is on the '78 tour.
I think there's a subtle change, for the better, in his drumming between '75 and '78.

I like some of his more unexpected takes. For instance on Where The Boys Go and Let Me Go. The counter rhythms he comes up with on those songs are awesome.

That lazy snare in Fool To Cry sums up why he is the best. Ever so slightly behind the beat and just beautiful.
