“Miss You” Turns 40 Today: 8 Unlikely Covers

covers by Temple City Kazoo Orchestra, Nadine Expert, Carla Bruni, Nadine
Expert, Mirwais, The Concretes, Etta James, Musiq Soulchild, Kendra Morris

"...something still lingers about “Miss You” long after disco stopped
registering as a dirty word. Credit Mick Jagger’s lovelorn vocals, delivered
with both fatigued yearning and seething anxiety; Bill Wyman’s Billy Preston-
derived bassline that held up even after every rocker’s boogie-down cash-in
lifted its rubber-legged lope; that earworm of a riff (whether guitar, electric
piano, or vocals) that Keith Richards found all sorts of angles and routes to;
secret weapon Sugar Blue killing it on harmonica. How it holds up in the hands of
others — what they take away, what they leave, what they turn inside-out — rides
a lot on just how hard it is to take away the song’s character no matter what
you do to it"

I can't quite figure it out...why am I enjoying and having more fun listening to some of these covers than any version of Miss You played by the Stones in the past 300 years? Honestly, some of these are pretty cool, IMHO.

This is the most unlikely cover -- just the name says it all...

Proud to say I own an original 12" vinyl of the Temple City Kazoo Orchestra... It comes with a kazoo version of 'Whole Lotta Love' on the same side and 'Stayin` Alive' with '2001: A Sprach' on the flip side. I still think that record is why I've taken such a strong liking to kazoos.

Trouble In Mind
