Tie You Up (The Pain Of Love)
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

The Hit Factory, New York City, New York, US, June - August 1, 1983

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Ron Wood - electric guitar, bass, backing vocals
Chuck Leavell - piano, organ
Martin Ditcham - percussion
Brahms Coundoul - percussion
Moustapha Sisse - percussion

You're deaf to it, blind to it, then like a thunder clap
Feel the prickles running up and down your back
Why so divine, the pain of love
You have to work at it, stay with it, pay for it, bust your ass
Lie for it, cheat for it, forget about your past
Why so divine, the pain of love
You dream of it passionate, you get a rise from it
Feel the hot cum dripping on your thighs from it
Why, that’s so divine, the pain of love
You know, sometime you crave for it, cry for it, women will die for it
Looking back, cut the crap, was it really worth the rap
It's hard to survive the pain of love, well, ain't that right

Yeah, I need a time out, time to make my mind up
Substitute a line out, I'll be back next season with a bang

No release from the jail, no parole, no bail
Hard leather, fifty lashes, heartbreak and money splasher
It's hard to survive the pain of love, well, alright

The old maid is roughing up, applying the final touches
Though she's late for the dance
I'll tell you tonight she's really gonna have a ball
She's gonna really tie me up, she's gonna really tie me up…
Yeah, the pains of love, why, they say, so divine, the pains of love, yeah
Don't hurt me, don't hurt me, don't hurt me, don't hurt me
Yeah, the pains of love, yeah, that’s what they call it
Baby, tie me up, tie me up, tie me up, tie me up
You’re gonna abuse it, don’t abuse it, so divine, so divine, the pains of love
Don't hurt me, don't hurt me, don't hurt me, don't hurt me, don't hurt me…

Produced by The Glimmer Twins & Chris Kimsey

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Undercover” LP
(Rolling Stones Records CUN 1654361) UK, November 7, 1983

Brilliant track - amusingly sleazy lyrics and I love the beat*

* Pun intended or not?? You decide! :E

"Pain of Love... is really just a playful song, I think. Just a kind of Lowell Fullsom soul riff with a little smash of S&M...
Love is painful sometimes, sex too... or you can make it painful if you want to. Lots of people are fascinated by it
because everyone understands the pains of love and parting. And I'm not really an S&M freak or anything.
If I were I'd say so... and I'd get a lot of calls [laughs]."
- Mick Jagger, 1983, quoted on [www.timeisonourside.com]

Great piece of music!

The intro riff is a matter of beauty. It reminds me the riff just before the solo parts of Knocking. I've been trying to nail it since ages, and still I can't get it 100% right ...

A nasty, brutal little number that fits like a (leather) glove on the Undercover album. Like so many of the tracks on this gloriously savage record, it shows us how intimately sex and pleasure are bound up with violence and pain. This one swings (both ways) and I like it, yes I do.

One of my favorite bridges. Jagger really works this number, there is not another singer that could write/deliver this number. Interesting to look back and see three percussionists and no Bill Wyman. The Stones have only a small hand full of great sex songs and this is one of them.

A decent album track. It's not a song I'd naturally select to play by the Stones or even the first one I'd put on from Undercover - that would be Feel On.

However, it works really well within the space of the Undercover album, which to my ears is a close neighbour to Black And Blue. In fact the whole album is black and blue all over both musically and physically with Tie You Up being the obvious example of the latter.

Love the line "feel the hot cum dripping on your thighs from it" which always gets a snigger whenever I hear it. It's as outrageous as anything they've written and reinforced the Stones' bad boy credentials at a time when they were starting to look a bit old hat, post punk.

I also always visualise the infamous billboard advert for Black And Blue when I think of Tie You Up.

Great track. The best track on Undercover as far as I am concerned.
Great riff, great rhythm, very funny and clever lyrics.
Somehow, it reminds me of Slave on Tattoo You. It has the same kind of musical quality, like a jam-like feeling but with both a groove and a melody that sticks.

Very decent track... Not the greatest. Not the worst. Not filler.

Always been a favorite track, just can't sit still when I hear it. A shame they never tried it live. I think it's better than She Was Hot.

Possibly the best track on UNDERCOVER and a stellar song overall. Awesome incredible tune. Great lyrics, great guitaring, the vocals are outstanding.

It's it "You dream of its passion" instead of "You dream of it passionate"?

Love the line "feel the hot cum dripping on your thighs from it"

I've always heard Mick's vocal as "feel the outcome" ... perhaps he cleaned things up a bit? smoking smiley

Same meaning. Heh heh! Prefer the dirty version which I think is correct.

Dirty works for me Mike, but isn't "outcome" more clever?

Ah, this track is from a time when Mick's lyrics were still often hard to discern ... which created some delicious ambiguities. Plus you couldn't just go online to find out what the hell he was singing!

Perhaps, but not accurate.

Anyway, I Love the track - fantastic guitar work with a great vocal performance by Mick!

From one point of view one may think that UNDERCOVER starts with two songs of single material, the (more or less) highly experimental album title song and the more Stones traditionalistic, but grand "She Was Hot" with its moments of ecstatic tension. Those are possibly also the two greatest songs of the album. All the same, then "Tie You Up (The Pain of Love)" cannot be praised enough for doing the wonderful and magic trick of uniting "the singles material" with the album oriented songs, without one feeling it as a fall in experienced quality. As a consequence of that feat, neither the following songs is felt as such a fall. Somehow to me,"Tie You Up" is the key song, too, to start to love the album, which to a minority of fans is the last truely GREAT Stones album.

I love the little guitar solo/lick right in the last couple of seconds on this, and the swirling fading keys.

Who plays that guitar?

I also agree that the bridge ('Yeah, I need a time out...') is perfect, and the line about 'I'll be back next season with a bang' makes me a little sad, because, as we all know, it wouldn't be till several years later that they'd be back on stage...

Definitely Drew. Think you've invented a new sexual term there.

this is a little jewel. so many great tracks on this album.

the people that lump Undercover and Dirty Work together haven't a clue.

A lot of people hate on this track, but I think it's a great little number.

The dry production and that horrible drum sound take away from it, as do some of the campier lyrics.

On the upside--killer bridge, as others have noted. Supremely funky.

It coulda been a contender if a few better decisions were made in the production process.

Too bad some of the down n dirty blues feel of the original jam didn't make it to the final cut.

Tie You Up jam

Update of Stray Cat Blues, great track. Ferocious rocker, great guitars, Charlie is locked in and some great vocals and lyrics from Mick. Love this one! My fav from Undercover.

Love this song. Pretty sure the bridge is...

"Yeah I need a time out / Time to make my mind up
Searching through the line up / I'll be back next season with a find"

Definitely one of the best songs on Undercover. It's got a dance groove while maintaining it's rock credibility. Even 80's production can't ruin this tune. It must be a blast to play, I would love to hear them do it at a show. Slip this in there instead of OOC and the place would be rocking.

Love the riffs on the outro and Bill's Ronnie's bass playing is great.

thx for the correction peoplewitheyes.
