this is one of the greatest songs ever written by anyone in the history of the world.

The template for the new Stones. Gritty swamp rock. They nail it! I love the intro, and always wished they would play that intro live. It builds up the anticipation until Jagger's cat call. Boiling over with sexuality and attitude. A sublime song that always leaves you wanting more...

And now are you ready, is everybody ready?, Ladies and Gentlemen the World's Greatest Rock and Roll band...

What else can one say? PLay it in Open E; makes a hell of a difference.

An absolute unrelenting, intoxicating masterpiece.

We're listening to the sound of change, of pop music taking on a bolder, harder form and of rock being channelled via the pop charts to millions of people across the world. Sure Hendrix and Cream and a few others had begun to hone their r'n'b into a harder incredible rock music in the previous 18 months but this was the moment that the penny dropped for all the folks outside of the hip underground.

From this point on and with Andrew Loog Oldham gone the Stones waved goodbye to their London influenced pop and began to embrace Americana wholeheartedly. The single also marked the start of their golden Big Four albums period.

I was hardly to be considered a human being at the time they released this earth shattering
piece of music, being only a year old. I would give a part of my body if it was possible to travel
through time and actually be there in 1968 when the song was played on the radio for the very
first time.
I am quite sure it must have been a moment of glorious joy, to those who followed the band
in the 60s, to be confronted with all these guitars, fighting for attention.

After the publication of Between the Buttons, Flowers and Their Satanic Majesties Request,
and the singles Let's Spend The Night Together/Ruby Tuesday, We Love You/Dandelion,
She's A Rainbow/2000 Light Years From Home and In Another Land/The Lantern, what was the next
thing to expect coming from the Stones? More psychadelica? More popsongs?

NO WAY!

My top song of all time.

From the start to the finish it's just about perfect.

Lyrics, Riff, Chorus, Intro and Outro and all the finishing touches and how it's sung and played.

I don't like the live versions much because they are played differently and Mick usually sings it differently but the studio version is something else.

Yes, so do I.

Nearly always disappointed with live versions.

1) Mick sings it different (lazy staccato)
2) No proper intro.

Except the MSG '69 version has the above two points but is just awesome anyway. Fresh and powerful.

it sure is fun to play, even just sitting around with an acoustic guitar...

it is a powerful thing to listen to either live or original.

Cool to see those videos this morning

A while back, when I was learning some video editing software, I created a fun lil video for myself using 5-6 different version of JJF over time. I edited all of versions together seamlessly and created my "JJF across time" version of one the greatest songs of all time. I was just looking for that edit... but alas, those videos will do.

Best concert opener EVER! Plus it makes a pretty nice gas station:

It's one of the signature Stones tunes from the Stones' signature period. Period.

A masterpiece. Never quite liked it live. And a great video too.

BTW, I've seen versions of Flashpoint with either the apostrophe spelling and with a letter
g at the end of Jumping.
Is this a way to tell bootlegged version from the real stuff?

Mick in ACCORDING TO THE ROLLING STONES (p.116): "I remember the recording session for `Jumpin' Jack Flash', and not liking the way it was done very much. It was a bit haphazard—and although the end result was pretty good, it was not quite what I wanted. The fidelity wasn't that great; it wasn't quite as in your face as it could have been."

I love it, but I do wonder what it would have been like with straight electric guitars, rather than overloaded acoustic guitars.

The original track is a studio masterpiece. What's interesting about it to me is that the band was coming out of their psychedelic era and this recording has elements of psychedelia combined with tantalizing hints of what would become the "classic" Stones sound. It bridges two periods of the band's history. Jagger is at his best lyrically and vocally, full of menace. The promo film of the group in war paint made with Michael Lindsay-Hogg perfectly captures the mood of this fantastic song.

The live version that the band has played basically since 1969 is almost an entirely different track, cutting off the intro entirely and boiling things down to their essence. It's great, but it's almost another song. The original belongs in a class with "Strawberry Fields" - a studio creation that really can't be replicated live.

Nicky Hopkins plays organ on this, too? Along with Bill? That disappoints me. I always thought it was Bill's greatest bass part ever until I found out Keith played it. (Although it sounds very Bill). Then I found out Bill played organ on it and I figured he did that crazy little jazz coda at the end that I love. So Bill did or didn't play it? Did Nicky play it? It's really good and funky and I thought it was great that Bill made that contribution and showed a side to Bill we hadn't seen at that point.
