Blues guitar great Hubert Sumlin dies

SUNDAY, 04 DECEMBER 2011 16:58 WRITTEN BY JIM WHITE

Sumlin had just turned 80 last month. He died in a hospital in Wayne, N.J., reportedly of heart failure.

Here's a very nice tribute to Sumlin written by guitarist Bob Margolin, back in 2003.

Oh yeah steady rollin Bob Margolin used to play for Muddy Waters and also go out with this chick who also dated my roommate back in the day.

Very sad news...yes, I saw him with the Stones as a guest at the MSG show too, MJ. It was cool to see the Stones working with one of THE all times Blues giants.

Had the good fortune to see Hubert several times in concert.

Must have been 10 years ago or so at an outdoor show near Tampa, FL. Hubert and Bob Margolin were playing together. I know Bob and was chatting it up with him before the show. Hubert was late showing up. Turns out he had stopped somewhere at a local guitar shop to pick up some strings and while there he was recognized and he had spent a considerable amount of time signing things and talking to people. By all accounts a good guy and a musical legend. R.I.P.

My favourite guitarist along with Keef and Pete T. THE last man standing indeed. Now he is gone to a better place.

I had the chance to see you in 2004 but missed the opportunity, the grievance will now go on forever. But may you rock away forever with Chester and the other lads on a big cloud Mr Sumlin!!

RIP

RIP. One of the Greats.

Reportedly, he recorded a follow-up album to "About Them Shoes" but his label went bust and it never came out. Here's hoping it will come out now as his legacy.

A tremendous loss! He was a true blues master and wrote the book on how to play it.

Ouch! Hubert and The Wolf. One of my favorite combinations. Put Smokestack Lightnin on and feel the groove. I have heard stories about Hubert from people who know. A great gentleman by all accounts.

Hubert was a fantastic guitar player. A class act. He really had his own sound together, and without him the Wolf band would probably not reached those great heights. He had been operating on just one lung for many years and as many of you had seen he was taking oxygen when on stage. There just aren't many of the old great blues players around and not many coming up to take their places. I was fortunate to have seen Sumlin play many times. Always a treat. His work with Wolf will always stand tall and proud.
RIP Hubert.
