Good pick, Silver Dagger. Got into her music after she played at Roskilde
Festival this summer. Have had her album in heavy rotation since

Apart from that I think this year belongs to the Bear Family label with them re-issuing
Bo Diddley's Beach Party, them collecting Sonny Burns' Starday recordings which
resulted in a very fine comp of Texas honky-tonk, and finally topping it of with
the tremendous Bristol Sessions box set

Are they a German label? I got a great reissue of Jim Ford's incredible late 60s country soul sides called The Sounds Of Our Time. I didn't believe such a great style of music still existed that I hadn't heard.

ten favorite albums from some of you! in one year!

not even in 1968 or 1969, when all we did was smoke rope and listen to music,
did we have ten favorite albums from one year...

ten songs, definitely, but ten albums????

how many times can you possibly listen to these albums?

anyway, grammies say bruno mars, adele, gaga, foo fighters, and rihanna...

havent heard anything from the foo fighters album that we recall at the moment,
so can't say one way or the other.

only know the gaga album from the singles, and dislike every one.

adele's a fine singer, haven't hated any of the songs we've heard, but do
not at all understand all the fuss.

actually have bruno mars album, only listened to it two or three times,
some very good tracks, the radio ones mostly. sorta billy joel meet bill withers
or something like that. possible "song of the year" for "the lazy song".
finally an anthem for the rest of us.

rihanna's "loud", have listened to 40 or 50 times. great great great even if
it does veer off dangerously close to katy perry territory a few times, but each
time saved by that reggae/dancehall backbeat, which dominates on many of
the tracks. we like every track, and love at least half.

otherwise, the only other album of 2011 we listened to a lot was superheavy,
30 or 40 times, but we pulled the plug on it the instant jagger did, and
havent heard it once since. really liked or loved about 10 of the 14 tracks
when we were listening to it, but we've got a serious mental block against
it at the moment. kinda even dislike it now, which is weird.

I don't think anyone is asking for 10 alltime classic albums, but just to name around 10 of the best you've heard so far. Of the ones I've listed I can say easily that "Yes I would listen to them many times; I HAVE listened to them many times".
Why the Grammy nominees?

Why the Grammy nominees?

mostly for variety's sake, because there was only two albums that thrilled us
that were released this year.

also because (with exceptions of course) we tend to not listen to obscure stuff,
but rather to stuff having mass cultural impact (and we still put the stones
in that category).

an exception might be if mick and keith and a bunch of people on this board
recommended the same obscure thing. another exception this year was stuff
by the individual superheavies, much of which we admired, but none of
which took over our lives for any appreciable time (excepting damian's
work, which was all released 2010 or earlier)

also because jagger listens to pop/hiphop/dance stuff, so we're just
playing follow the leader...

also because there is a general feeling out there that the grammys
do reflect popular opinion much more these days than they did during the
stones heyday. and because this year is the year we discovered that we
actually really like some of the popular music of today (as long as we
dont watch "some girls texas" again and suddenly hate everything else
ever made since)

Decemberists - The King Is Dead
Israel Nash Gripka - Barn Doors & Concrete Floors
Beastie Boys - Hot Sauce Committee Part 2
Warren Haynes - Man In Motion
Tedeschi Trucks Band - Elevator
Jayhawks - Mokkingbird Time
New Cool Collective - 18
Rich Robinson - Through A Crooked Sun

And really looking forward to 'El Camino' by the Black Keys (to be released this week).

Thanks for reminding me about Israel Nash Gripka. I got the album last night and it's brilliant. Some of the best alt-country I've heard in ages. Reminds me of early Wilco with a bit of Jayhawks thrown in.

Wilco vs. Jayhawks! Nice!

The first review I read said it sounded like Fogerty vs. the Band.

Yep, it's a German label. Specialized in re-issuing old country and r'n'r
[www.bear-family.de]

btw Bo Diddley's Beach Party was actually a Hip-O Select release and not on BF
Sorry for the mix-up

The PJ Harvey album is tremendous, a stone cold classic, and i've never been a fan. Conversely i think Kate Bush is somewhat of a musical genius but i found 50 Words For Snow rather hard going and lacking in inspiration.

I was at a party on saturday. Without saying anything to anybody I threw in this CD. What happens? People get up from the table and start dancing spontaneously.

Matter of fact both of them put out very good releases in 011. I have "Believers" by A.A.Bondy.
I know Ron Sexsmith put out an album but can't recall the title.
It's called "Long Player Late Bloomer"

Social Distortion - Hard Times & Nursery Rhymes
Black Keys - El Camino
Gillian Welch - The Harrow & The Harvest

Amy's 'Lioness - Hidden Treasures' is out today and I'll be buying it later. I know I'll love it.

Been a pretty good year for albums IMO.

5. Kate Bush - 50 Words For Snow

Played this 3 times in the last 24 hours.

You can't accuse her of being commercial that's for sure.

This is a nice ambient chilling album that's a grower.

Nearly fell of my chair when I read in the credits that Elton John was doing the duet on the 5th track... that's so not Elton John.. Elton John in genuine artistic moment shock.

I got given a great 2011 album for Christmas that I'd heartily recommend to anyone who likes dreamy, psychedelic indie rock/pop. It's by a New Zealand/Brit band called Connan Mockasin and the album is called Forever Dolphin Love. It sounds like a weird mix of Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, Can, PIL, the Cocteau Twins and Prince. Very strange and wonderful.

The Fame Studio Story on Ace is the best reissue, alongside Bobby Charles' rhinohandmade reissue.

I would add that Low Country Blues by Gregg Allman is the best thing I heard all year.

Predictably...

New ones by Wilco, Lucinda Williams, Warren Haynes, Tedeschi-Trucks Band, Paul Simon, Lindsey Buckingham, Robbie Robertson, Brian Wilson (yeah, the Disney Album, I'm a hopeless fan!), Ryan Adams, Gary Clark, Jr, Gregg Allman, Tom Waits, Rich Robinson.

Ross

You should really check out the Barn Doors & Concrete Floors album by Israel Nash Gripka. Judging by your choices, you'll love that one.

Thanks for the tip. I found this the other day and I dig!

I don't go into favourite albums lightly, but this year has been pretty good I think.
I buy loads of albums both new and used, even a few downloaded if that's the only way to get something.
So in no particular order here's some that came my way this year,
Ashes and Fire Ryan Adams
Blessed Lucinda Williams
Pull Up Some Dust Ry Cooder
El Camino Black Keys
Go Go Boots Drive By Truckers
Low Country Blues Greg Allman
Let Them Talk Hugh Laurie
Colour Of The Trap Miles Kane
Suck It And See Arctic Monkeys
High Flying Birds Noel Gallagher
I'll Never get Out Of Here Alive Steve Earle
Superheavy
How to become a Clairvoyant Robbie Robertson

can't think of any more off hand.

Bought loads of re releases and so forth, but had to wait till right at the end of the year to get what was really needed and they came in all sorts of forms,
An official Download ,The Brussels Affair
A re package Some Girls Deluxe,
and a
DVD/CD combo Some Girls Live In Texas.
All of course by our beloved ROLLING STONES
