December's finally here and I think it's safe to say there won't be any more great albums released before year end.

1. Anna Calvi - Anna Calvi.

In no particular order...

1. Jayhawks - Mockingbird Time
2. Wilco - The Whole Love
3. Thundercat - Golden Age of The Apocolypse
4. Bowie - Toys
5. The London Souls
6. 'Floyd - Wish You Were Here (the bonus disc is a proper "lost album")
7, Dum Dum Girls - Only In Dreams
8. Pendragon - Passion
9. Steven Wilson - Grace For Drowning
10 Chickenfoot III

Bubbling just under; The Horrors, Anna Calvi, Opeth - Heritage and The Cars - Drive Like This. The SG bonus disc is ALMOST a marvelous lost album except for the jarring differences between Jagger's vocals now and then and Jagger's harp in the same body of work with Sugar Blue. It is what is but it's just a tiny bit disconcerting.

Tom Waits - Bad As Me
Adele - 21
The Who - Quadrophenia boxset
Rolling Stones - Live In Texas
Rolling Stones - Some Girls deluxe
Thin Lizzy - Live At BBC
Rory Gallagher - Notes from San Francisco

Predictably...

New ones by Wilco, Lucinda Williams, Warren Haynes, Tedeschi-Trucks Band, Paul Simon, Lindsey Buckingham, Robbie Robertson, Brian Wilson (yeah, the Disney Album, I'm a hopeless fan!), Ryan Adams, Gary Clark, Jr, Gregg Allman, Tom Waits, Rich Robinson.

New Oldies: Stones (Brussels, Live In Texas, Some Girls disc.2), Beach Boys - Smile Sessions, Quadrophenia, Alligator Records 40th Anniversary,

Off the top of my head, I'm sure I'm fogetting something. Not a bad year, actually!

Silver Dagger,

I honestly can't argue with your #1, Anna Calvi. Terrific record!

A few others I enjoyed: Wild Flag, Bon Iver, St. Vincent, Atlas Sound, Thurston Moore, Ry Cooder, The Horrors, Fleet Foxes, Steve Earle, Girls, and Gillian Welch.

And thanks for the compliment, Elmo.

<<Anna Calvi - Anna Calvi.>>

Good pick, Silver Dagger. Got into her music after she played at Roskilde
Festival this summer. Have had her album in heavy rotation since

Apart from that I think this year belongs to the Bear Family label with them re-issuing
Bo Diddley's Beach Party, them collecting Sonny Burns' Starday recordings which
resulted in a very fine comp of Texas honky-tonk, and finally topping it of with
the tremendous Bristol Sessions box set

Brussels, Live in Texas, Some Girls Deluxe, and although I prefer to not end up a punching bag, I'll say superheavy.

I had a busy year so I didn't buy a lot of new releases.

The Robert Plant album from last year 'Band of Joy' that I only bought this year because I was going to his concert, was sublime.

Just getting into the Black Keys, Brothers, Mumford and Sons (also 2010 release...or maybe 2009?) and am waiting with baited breath for Miles "Kind of Blue" and the Kinks "The Ultimate Collection" from Amazon.co.uk.

Jeez, it's getting pretty sad. My download of the new Brussels Affair is the first album I've acquired this year. I'll probably get the Some Girls Deluxe and maybe the Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here for Christmas. I haven't been impressed by anybody new. Rihanna is a guilty pleasure.

I'm in one of those places where I'm going back and finding older songs. Two of the Reggae cuts Mick Jagger mentioned in Rolling Stone recently, 'You Don't Love Me' - Dawn Penn, & 'Ring The Alarm' - Tenor Saw are killer.

Mostly it's just cuts I'm finding recently, like Nils Lofgrens 'Cry Just A Little' from the Bridges CD (which isn't on YouTube). Here's a new one if you want to test your subwoofer:

ten favorite albums from some of you! in one year!

not even in 1968 or 1969, when all we did was smoke rope and listen to music,
did we have ten favorite albums from one year...

ten songs, definitely, but ten albums????

how many times can you possibly listen to these albums?

anyway, grammies say bruno mars, adele, gaga, foo fighters, and rihanna...

havent heard anything from the foo fighters album that we recall at the moment,
so can't say one way or the other.

only know the gaga album from the singles, and dislike every one.

adele's a fine singer, haven't hated any of the songs we've heard, but do
not at all understand all the fuss.

actually have bruno mars album, only listened to it two or three times,
some very good tracks, the radio ones mostly. sorta billy joel meet bill withers
or something like that. possible "song of the year" for "the lazy song".
finally an anthem for the rest of us.

rihanna's "loud", have listened to 40 or 50 times. great great great even if
it does veer off dangerously close to katy perry territory a few times, but each
time saved by that reggae/dancehall backbeat, which dominates on many of
the tracks. we like every track, and love at least half.

otherwise, the only other album of 2011 we listened to a lot was superheavy,
30 or 40 times, but we pulled the plug on it the instant jagger did, and
havent heard it once since. really liked or loved about 10 of the 14 tracks
when we were listening to it, but we've got a serious mental block against
it at the moment. kinda even dislike it now, which is weird.

Thanks for reminding me about Israel Nash Gripka. I got the album last night and it's brilliant. Some of the best alt-country I've heard in ages. Reminds me of early Wilco with a bit of Jayhawks thrown in.
