Very sad. I don't understand a single word in French but always liked his voice and music. Fantastic live show in Colmar and Genf!

He was a kinda odd phenomenon. He sold out huge stadiums multiple times in a row, sold more than 110 million albums (that's more than acts like Iron Maiden or KISS sold) and was bigger than Elvis, Michael Jackson or even The Beatles - but only in France. Outside of France he was hardly known.

RIP

I feel so sad this morning.

I was born to music stealing my Dad’s Johnny and Stones LPs. Johnny’s been part of my life ever since, as for many people here in France.

Hard to believe he’s gone. I still saw him on stage in June, I was only a few feet away from the stage.

I am 41. I’ve been to many many concerts of many artists and bands in my life.
Only two I have seen both with my parents and my kids : Johnny and the Stones.

Johnny was of course a Stones fan. He was at DT in October last year.

RIP Johnny
You will be deeply missed.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience were supporting Johnny Hallyday on four dates in 1966. Johnny Hallyday had 2x nr 1 Hits in the Netherlands. Once walking the Rennes fleamarket you could find hundreds Hallyday vinyls.

He was too far away for us up north. Well, not enirely true, you`d have to have close connection to the French to know of him.

Saw him twice live, once in 1997 then in 2015.Each time, great shows and awesome voice perfomance.
I also saw him attending one of the Longchamps Stones Show in 1995.

In the mid 70ies I was on holiday in Cannes/France.
One evening I passed the old Festival Palace and was surprised to hear some good R&R music coming out from that building. I was told that Johnny Halliday was performing. Alas, the show was sold out.

A great voice, an animal magnetism
He had no writing talent, which was a pity in terms of fianncial income, but it helped him to stay "relevant" musically over the years.
Commercial success has always been there.

I am not a die hard fan, I do not like everything he did, but he had great taste in music and therefore good influences.
He opened France to rock n'roll much more than the Stones or the Beatles, only because he sang in french.

While I had heard that there was a "French Elvis" the first time I heard a Hallyday song was a vintage clip where they talked about his influence on the early-60's Cambodian Rock scene from this film:

It's fascinating to see how Rock n'Roll took over the entire world in the 50's and 60's ( a point also made by Ron Howard's Eight Days A Week Beatle doc). The work of non-English artists is (with the exception of a mere handful of hits) unknown in the U.S.

Interesting that the Small Faces worked with him:

and Emmylou Harris:

It's a shame that Hallyday isn't in the RnR HoF. Although it isn't just a language bias. You look at groups that were huge in the UK that aren't in and it's clear that unless you charted in the USA, forget about it.

Goodbye, Johnny. RIP

Johnny was a fine actor too.
Remember him in "L'homme du train", he played a bankrobber. Also in the comedy "Wanted".
Rest in peace.

Interesting clip : HTW played by a bunch of Satriani wanna-be's. Reminds of the Jagger'88 vid! grinning smiley

And overall there was madness on the air yesterday on French media : all the big medias (TV & radio) went "full Johnny" non-stop.

Imagine Vatican-TV covering the sudden death of the current Pope and you'll get a little idea of what French medias were like yesterday. It a sight to behold : I'm sure no politician or actor would get this lavish treatment.

In My opinion, a much better version. 3 verses... Maybe an idea that our Stones could use from time to time smiling smiley

That is great. With honoring Johnny,France celebrates Rock and Roll too; I like it.

He was much more than a rocker : he was a cultural phenomenon like Elvis. He had armies of fans with attics filled with memorabilia. Like Elvis he [had] armies of (often piitiful) look-a-likes.

Halliday was a true rocker... That is, he realized long ago he needed British or American musicians to have that sound. One example : Curt Bisquera who drummed on "Wandering Spirit" also did a tour with JH.

"Hommage Populaire"on Saturday - funeral procession down les Champs-Elysées fromn l'Arc de Triomphe to Place de la Concorde w/ M Macron and all the politicos. Almost a state funeral

[www.midilibre.fr] (en français).

Incredible outpouring of national emotion. Special editions of newspapers, magazines, etc.

Here's a show from his 2016 tour

Second number of the show - Killer version of "O Carole". Makes a great second song of a concert, n'est-ce pas?

Le mec pourrait mettre un spectacle d'enfer.
