One of their best tunes for me, I used to jam this in a band and can see why it'd be a bitch to do live...

Talk about a bassline! This is definitely one of Bill's all time standout tracks imo.
He keeps it moving and uses the upper register with great taste and slinkiness.

Here's the 'live' tablature on songsterr, for you bass players who haven't already had the pleasure.

I've loved that song since I first heard it !
- and still consider it to be a "signature-song" on BB . . .

One strange thing : Been "working" on a project concerning the different runningtimes of the Beggars Banquet album, - and have realised that
"Jigsaw Puzzle" seems to be the ONLY track that was never released outside the BB-album ! - ?
- not on singles, - not on compilations- anywhere in the world - vinyl or CD - not on anything - but
"Beggars Banquet" - All the other songs have releases elsewhere . . . .

- so if anyone knows of a release of "Jigsaw" - outside BB - Please post !

Interesting. No knowledge of any non-BEGGARS BANQUET appearances of "Jig-Saw Puzzle". Which makes me to ask - in where has "Dear Doctor" appeared outside the album? All the others I can quickly remember, but not that one (with "Puzzle").

Mexican EP, 1969, - with Honky Tonk, Sad Day & No Expectations.
German Decca compilation "Portraits" 1981
UK - Decca/Readers Digest compilation-box "The Great Years" 1982
- all holds "Dear Doctor" - but absolutely one of the rare !

Bullshit. Keith, you couldn't control that guy's contribution any way. Boss Taylor or Ronnie as much you want to, but Brian was not under your command. Once you were.

Not happy to quote myself, - but I was to hasty just to mention three sources
outside BB for "Dear Doctor" - but that was just what I could think of.
It has been released on several regional compilations, - Italy - Japan a.o. -
but had of course one worldwide release on "Slow Rollers" . . .
so not rare !
Different with "Salt Of The Earth" - which apparently only has two releases
outside the BB . . on ABKCO Promo-CD "Desert Island Survival Kit" 1994 &
"GRRR"-DeLuxe Box, . . .
and then "Jig-Saw Puzzle" which seems to be exclusive on BB - ! ?

Okay! Thanks for clearing this out. I thought the 'outside of original album appearance' had a bit lighter criterion, including also released live versions of the tracks (such as ROCK AND ROLL CIRCUS of "Salt of the Earth" - though only 'live' by vocals).

Yeah, of those "Dear Doctor" releases, only SLOW ROLLERS rings some bells to me..grinning smiley

Does your project include not only BEGGARS BANQUET but some other Stones albums as well?

"Beggars Banquet" is special when it comes to different runningspeeds, - changing the key of the songs, - so No, - it is concentrated to BB.
Different runningtimes can propably be found on several albums, - especially when it comes to US-releases.
The London company didn't have it's own pressing facilities, so all
Stones-US-albums were manufatured at several pressing plants, - so accidental
errors occour - (I have a US London "Aftermath" Mono where Side 1 runs noticeable slower, - but I consider this to be a technical default ) -
and I am sure numerous examples can be mentioned, - if they are looked for !

The unique "problem" about BB is, that some of the songs were released pretty
different from the very start, - and that the Dedicated Mono Mix of
"Sympathy For The Devil" is running so much faster than the Stereo-version !

Great song, but they can't do this in front of 50.000 people most of whom wouldn't even recognise Wild Horses.

Certainly they could, they've done Factory Girl, Salt of the Earth, Prodigal Son, No Expectations ... and the mentioned Wild Horses many times.

Hello all!
I have never really started a track talk thread, so if you would bare with me, that'd be nice. I love Jigsaw Puzzle. Everyone seems to have their own interpretation of the lyrics. I would like to hear your thoughts.

It really is a great song!

Interpretation? I assume it's supposed to be the author's point of view, surrounded by misfits and whatnot, and trying to piece it all together.

... and in a hurry too, as if it rains anymore, they will all go inside.

i would've liked this song better (meaning, at all) if he was indeed outside doing a jigsaw puzzle and trying to finish before the rain started -- that's a great setup for a story ... the tension ... will he indeed finish the puzzle before the rain comes?

but what the damn song says is

me im waiting so patiently
lying on the floor
im just tryna do this jigsaw puzzle
before it rains anymore

so, FIRST OF ALL, he's already inside. there are no floors outside so he's inside. SECOND OF ALL, it's already frickin rainin' ... he just wants to finish BEFORE IT RAINS ANYMORE. so he's INSIDE, DURING A RAINSTORM, and he's trying to finish BEFORE IT RAINS ANYMORE.

this is just bad flabby storytelling -- there's no stakes!

i don't CARE if he finishes before it rains ANYMORE ... cuz nothing will happen one way OR the other!

Amazing track ….. Jagger's rush of words piling up
like stock car racers on crack ...The push & build of the slide...…. PLAY LOUD

We're just trying to do this jigsaw puzzle …. Before it rains anymore......
