Semi OT: Excellent albums with one song you never liked
Posted by: RollingFreak ()

Was just listening to The Zombies Odyssey And Oracle today to celebrate their nomination to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Incredible record, so criminally underappreciated. One song to me though never really clicked with me: the smash single that closes the album Time Of The Season. One could argue their best known song. Never registered with me, but more importantly I feel sounds completely different than the rest of the album. Its this lush pop masterpiece and then ends with a disco-y type dance song that sounds nothing like what came before it. Doesn't "ruin" a perfect album to me, because now I begrudgingly respect it, and mainly chuckle through the song to end the record, but always stuck out to me.

Not the first time I've had this happen. The also fantastic record by Stories called About Us suffers the same problem, although there's was sort of out of their control. They have a great record, barely anyone knows it. Then the last song is, again, one thats completely different than the rest of the record and a dancey disco song. That song? Their biggest and only known hit Brother Louie. The album was done, they put it out, it exists without the song, it didn't sell, the record company made them do this, tack it on, and lo and behold ends up being their biggest hit. Hysterical! And the only song I never liked.

Other albums I felt suffered the same problem by not knowing when to end their side 1's are Ziggy Stardust. A fantastic masterpiece record. Why did David Bowie feel the need to tack on a cover song, and a bad one at that, onto the end of side 1? Its truly baffling. The only non original and the only bad song, It Ain't Easy. Again, I can sort of laugh my way through all these weird songs now but they break the flow of otherwise perfect front to back records. I'd argue, and probably not get much support here, that You Gotta Move for years was always the thorn in my side on Sticky Fingers. I get now that it probably adds a blues context to the record thats maybe necessary, but it sounds nothing like the rest of the record and for years threw me off.

Just always found these funny. The guy's who's songs sound nothing like the rest of the album but are their biggest hits, the songs that are the only covers on otherwise original studio albums. Anybody have albums that have the WTF song you never quite understood on there? For years, that one song is why I rated Let It Bleed as a better all around record (even though I guess one could argue Country Honk but I always didn't mind it).

Here's a quick four from four of my favorite bands/artists.

Jimi Hendrix's Axis:Bold as Love - She's So Fine written and sung by bassist Noel Redding. Not a horrible song, but far from great. Hendrix starts it with a great riff and plays some nifty guitar throughout, but even that can't save the tune. Also, Noel's vocals are weak and the track as a whole suffers because of them. Sounds more like an outtake from a Cream album...like the stupid little brother of Cream's I Feel Free. If there's such a thing as a "piss break" on an album, this would be the one.

Led Zeppelin - D'yer Mak'er from Houses of the Holy. Again not a horrible tune, and it was played on the radio quite a bit back in the '70s where I lived, but they basically massacred a reggae type tune and the results are cruddy. Not sure if it's really much worse than the Crunge from the same album - that one having the faux James Brown feel to it, but John Paul Jone's bass alone makes that one a keeper.

Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue title track. Never much liked it and never will. And while the corny reggae of Send it To Me is really cheesy, and Indian Girl ranks with many other Stones bottom dwellers of the latter era, neither are quite as bad as the title track.

The Beatles - Maxwell Silver Hammer from Abbey Road. Intentionally funny and unintentionally funny at the same time. Taints the entire album and is to be avoided at all costs. A shame Manson didn't have the chance to listen to this instead of the White album and Helter Skelter - he might have ended up a happy chap in a clown suit instead of a psycho killer.

I only include excellent albums, not just good or alright albums

Some Girls: Faraway Eyes
Crosseyed Heart: Blues in the Morning
Tattoo You: Hang Fire
Main Offender: Yap Yap and Body Talks
Talk Is Cheap: Big Enough
Get Yer Ya Ya's Out: Street Fighting Man

The big four excellent albums of the Stones don't have any song I don't like.

London Calling: Lovers Rock

12X5 – Suzie Q
Out Of Our Heads – Oh Baby (We Got A Good Thing Going)
Their Satanic Majesties Request – Sing This All Together (See What Happens)
Black And Blue – Crazy Mama
Emotional Rescue – Indian Girl

The Rolling Stones, Aftermath, Between The Buttons, Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main Street, Some Girls and Tattoo You are all excellent as they are.

The rest of the albums are good to very good (and with more than one weak song), imo, hence not in the target group here.

No. 2: Under the Boardwalk
Uncercover: Wanna Hold You
Tattoo You: Start Me Up
Wandering Spirit: Out Of Focus, and to a certain extent Angel In My Heart

Infidels: Man Of Peace and to a certain extent Union Sundown

JJ Cale: To Tulsa and Back: Rio

Abbey Road: Maxwell's Silver Hammer

Heathen: A Better Future
Outside. Wishful Beginnings
Lodger: Red Money; probably because Sister Midnight is so much better

Crosseyed Heart - Goodnight Irene. Maybe sacrilege but I always skip this one. Otherwise the album is great.

Bridge Over Troubled Water- Bridge Over Troubled Water. Paul Simon is a genius and I like virtually everything by S&G. Never really liked this particular title track though.

Emotional Rescue: Dance Pt.1
Steel Wheels: Almost Hear You Sigh

Haha, yes but the verses arent that bad really. Of course it's a throw away ie a Ringo song BW (before with a little help). Submarine was good.

Revolver: got to get you into my life. It is Sunshine or this annoying little thing. Not bad song writing but the production and lack of magical touch of Beatlesness makes me skip it. Always.

As for the Stones

Black and Blue: Hot Stuff

U2 Joshua Tree - Everything is perfect until the last two songs: "Exit" and "Mothers of the Disappeared". One of the best albums ever but those last two just don't seem to do it justice as album closers.

Lol who ever said that Emotional Rescue was an excellent album?

Abbey Road...I Want You (She’s so Heavy), dark, plodding and repetitive equals boring

Sgt Peppers...Within and Without You, dumb title, dumber song...and by dumb I mean it doesn’t speak to me, never has.

Tattoo You...Hang Fire, just by this track alone, it’s clear that this is an outtake release...Littleness T&A isn’t far behind either

the shoot 'em dead, brainbell jangler!

Yup. Totally forgot about that. Rest of the album is excellent, only bad song. Honestly, Four Sticks on IV is exactly the same to me. Hats Off To Roy Harper on III to me is arguably the same as well.

Someone said The Joshua Tree, yes. I never liked Mothers Of The Disappeared, but loved the whole rest of the album.

The best example of this is "Knocked Out Loaded" by Bob Dylan.
I don't even have to mention the great song - I guess you know

The two most obvious weak tracks off of otherwise excellent albums are :

1) "Dear Doctor" from Beggars' Banquet

and

2) "Lies" from Some Girls ..... although "Lies" sounded better live on the '78 tour

"Soul Survivor" is one of the best songs out there by anyone.

"Emotional Rescue" is good as well ..... if you are in the mood to hear it but,I understand that it will never be everyone's cup of tea.
