Question about rich stadium August 8th 1975

In the Old Gods book (which I know is factually unreliable) it says at the final show of the 75 tour at Rich Stadium just outside of Buffalo that Mick, Keith and Woody took acid and Mick sang Brown Sugar as the band played Street Fighting Man (or something like that). The last fact is clearly not true but there is a major screw up during the If You Can't Rock Me/ Get Off Of my Cloud segue. I have this show on cassette and I have listened to that screw up but I have never been able to figure out what was going on - it sounds like band is still playing If You Can't Rock Me but Mick is singing something else. Anyone with that audio source got any insight into what was going on.

If memory serves, the mistake is entirely on Mick's side. He just carries on singing despite of what the band is playing; and also stops when he discovers his mistake - way too late. Never heard Jagger as out of it as the 1st half of that show. It seems that whatever he was on; wore somewhat off for the 2nd half of the show.

MSG, 17 January '98 they sort of did something like that. The band played 'Respectable' and Mick sang 'When the Whip Comes Down'. They sort of got away with it!

Remember hearing Dylan doing something similar at a Paris show in 1978 (5th July for anyone who has the tapes). The band play the arrangement for 'Love Minus Zero No Limit' that he used on that tour, and Bob sings 'Its all over now baby blue' instead!

Dylan's mistakes goes even further....there's a line-recording of his concert in Vienna; WA 1993; where he tricks *himself*....it's not the band that tricks him - as it's an acoustic song. He's starts playing "Boots Of Spanish Leather" and starts singing "It Ain't Me Babe"....after one verse, he discovers the problem, and starts all over again. That's quite funny; his guitar and his voice fools eachother - and Dylan's stuck inbetween

I agree that the band totally settled down in the second half of the Rich Stadium show. There is a Bob Dylan show in the fall of 1990 with the roadie band (after GE Smith left) where Bob sings I'll Remember You but the band is clearly expecting I Believe In You based on the lick the one guitar is playing

Acid was already rather passe by 1975. It typically got way too speedy and most psychedelic veterans had moved on.

Keith was busted for acid, among other various & nefarious substances, after having a car wreck post-gig in 1976. Granted it's a year later - but it may be some indication Lysergia still circled the Stones camp around that time.

He claimed it wasn't his, but I wouldn't either.

There was a lot of really bad acid at that Aug 8, 1975 show because I was there and saw lots of kids carried out on stretchers, plus someone reminded me not to accept drinks from anyone I didn't know because of the acid. I think they were calling it yellow sunshine...and I really didn't notice any major slip-ups by Mick....must have been busy taking photos. I do recall " Angie" done so beautifully that you could hear a pin drop...95,000 fans mesmerized....also an incredible " Wild Horses" that was equally powerful. Mick was in great voice to pull off two big ballads.

Were you there, ERICSNOW? I would love to compare notes and memories with anyone at that show!

Hi Debra, no I wasn't there at all - I'm just familiar with the great sounding recording of the show.

Oh, that's too bad Eric, I am dying to discuss this show with someone who actually was there! It was my very favorite Stones show of all time. At least you enjoyed the sound of the show. Do you know anyone who was there?

I remember this also a bit uncomfortable for a minute or so, my buddy to turned to me an asked what song they were doing and i said whip because of mick singing the words but the music was a bit off

I consider it one of the best of the 75 boots. The band had a great time and so did the crowd.

I wanted to go but my mom wouldn't let me. I begged her but to no avail. But my brother and many friends did. I distinctly remember sleeping at a friends house (as compensation for not being allowed to attend), and watching the 11:00 news sitting on the floor in front of the tv and the anchor says, "Let's go out to Rich Stadium and check on the Rolling Stones." I see Mick prancing on stage and it just broke my heart. All I heard for the rest of the summer and to this day was how good that show was.

However seven months later in March of 1976, she let me go to my first concert, David Bowie at the old "Aud" I missed it by that much. I still occasionally remind her about that.

I was at that show. Took a day off work. There were lots of persons in the audience "out of it" - great night though

Hey there, Sicilian, did you live near Buffalo at the time? That stadium is out in the middle of nowhere! After the show that night, when I got back to our hotel, I watched Mick on the news too...in his purple cape, dancing...I feel bad that your mom didn't let you go but it was a scary crowd. And Peter, so what else do you remember about that night and the show?

Correct Mickschix, the stadium is in the middle of nowhere. I drove down from Niagara Falls, Canada. Getting to the parking areas by the stadium was a bit of nightmare; while in a traffic jam 3 guys jumped (uninvited!) into my car and I drove them to the stadium. The weather was great that day - I sat to the right of the stage just up from the the sidelines as the field was packed. I saw Charlie from a distance (pre-show) walking around the backstage area. The support acts were good, and it was the first (and only) time that I got to see Bobby Womack live. I recall that The Stones came on at dusk, nice timing. It was my second time seeing them as I had caught one of their shows in Toronto earlier on the same tour. Loved the concert, favourite moment was seeing Mick lead about 20 people in a conga line around the stage during Billy Preston's song break, and watching Keith at the same time really getting into his groove, lurching back & forth and riffing to the instrumental song being played. The ticket price was $10 (see below, I had a spare ticket for my brother but he couldn't make the show). I really like that photo of Mick after the show, him standing alone on the empty and littered playing field (it's in the Leibovitz/Sykes-Southern-"The Rolling Stones On Tour" book). I believe that the "Farewell Concert" was an added bonus to the tour itinerary as they didn't play the planned South American gigs to follow after the US tour. It was a fantastic day.

PS: Sicilian, I also made it to the Bowie gig in Buffalo that you mention. Another great show.

Yes I do live in Buffalo. I drove by the stadium today. Back then, concerts at the stadium had a bad reputation for lots of rowdy kids and many arrests. Although I did attend the 1978 show in the same stadium.

Peter: Nice stub. That Bowie show was a memorable one. Hey Erik tongue sticking out smiley you missed a good one.

How was that 1978 show? I have some of it on a boot. That's another 1978 show I've never seen any photos of (Boulder is another).

Disappointing. I expected something more retro and got a Some Girls concert.

I didnt hear any f-ck ups on the boot (if it indeed is the right boot, date) but Mick sounds really wasted on something.

I have heard the boot and it sounds sloppy, but never noticed anything out of the ordinary with lyrics from one song used over another tune.

I am sure if you search this site you will find the boot. People on IORR are very generous about sharing boots, and taking the time to upload (and re-upload) again and again.

Listen to If You Can't Rock Me into Get Off Of My Cloud. There is something majorly screwed up about it. I don't know what Mick is doing but he seems to be in some alternate universe.

Thanks for your recap, PETER! I got there way too early, around noon and got a place right in front of the stage and it was HOT! Hot and sunny, and yes, Bobby Womack opened and then the Outlaws, which I enjoyed. Then the plane that did death spirals over the crowd...that I did NOT enjoy...and then the man that blew himself up with dynamite in the coffin...did you see that?? It was a strange mix of entertainment, if you can call it that. I was alone so I talked to a lot of people and some were already tripping out on the Yellow Sunshine.
Back up to my ticket..I stayed at a motel and got my ticket for $25 from the Hell's Angels. My Dad almost stroked out as I walked up to buy the ticket, but they were nice enough. It was an experience I'll never forget. I remember that the Stones would NOT come on until dusk/dark, around 9:05pm, to be exact. Billy Preston was a riot with his afro wig and congo line, doing the bump with Mick. Thanks for your summary, it was great to hear from a fan that was there.

Mick sang like that for the whole tour. Mick singing the wrong lyrics is an urban myth. Never happened. I was there and the evedence is on the bootleg.
I was also at the June 15th Buffalo Memorial Aud show a few months before. I remember bragging to my friends about the lotus stage. When we got inside I was dissapointed that it wasn't there.

I agree HOT ROCKS! A myth perpetrated by fans who were NOT at that show! As much as I loved the lotus stage, I loved the smaller, more intimate stage. There was a lot more interaction amongst the band members in the closer confines of the Aug 8 stage.

I consider 1975 to be the best year (nuts in a way if you listen to 1972/1973 I know) and Mick sang great (he never sang better) but he's a bit lost here. He sounds like he's really really high.

Mickschix; If you loo at the book The Rolling Stones On Tour (1975 green cover with logo). On page 141 there's that great pick of Mick standing on the field at Rich Stadium after the show. The pic must of been taken 1 or 2 in the morning!
Also on page 130 and 131 that's The Stones at old Statler Hotel on Delaware ave were they stayed. Notice that that the TV says New Treasure Hunt WBEN old WIVB Saturday at 7:30 Channel 4. A local Buffalo station. After the book came out my buddy and I went to the hotel and had to stand in front of room 817 just to say Keith stood here. 16 years old and the things we do!!
