For me in those mags, there was constant exposure to pretty interesting people in art, science, technology and sure, fashion and cologne and all that fascinating manly stuff for a 12 year old going to see James Bond movies with Sean Connery, and yes, hip to The Stones before I was 12 1/2 years old.
Hugh, well he made it to 91 I guess, God bless him.
Kinda scary because my every morning friend for years at super early coffee, and every day, is mah pal who just turned 90. He's riding his bike everyday and doing mighty fine but you know...some of you do....he's slowing down tho remarkable smart and pressent and sensitive...you can tell he's slowing way down and the thought of losing him is scary to me.
I don't objectify him tho very much respectful and loving toward him. I'm funny when I don't feel like being funny, just to egg him on and challenge him and he's pretty damn quick; so it's real to me at this age I guess; even tho he's 25 years or more older....and it scares me frankly; I like to think I'm more philosophical, and he is over 90 after all and all that; but when it's someone in your life age doesn't take away the closeness or presence at all.
Hef was on the cutting edge; more than fold-outs and pre-teen fantasies of gauze-shot teen boobies...and having that really cool sophistacated watch or cuff links to go with the evening wear you'll never have except when you rent a tuxedo for some rubber-chicken horrible affair....
Just riffing and joking here, but seriously respect Hefner and his influence. The writing was often excellent.!
People DID buy it for the articles and interviews.
I remmeber my first detailed interview-readings from seminally important diverse and dynamic peeps, again like Ginsburg, and so many...Dylan! Sartre, Kubrick; I shouldn't even have started; there are about 80 on this list and more than half of them are fascinating, easily.
Please check out this list of some of the featured interviews. These were seriously like a kind of intellectual Bible primer on a high level for a kid growing into teens and then beyond...

I mean this is astounding; and a LOT of these crucially influential peeps would NOT have been covered, ever, with such freewheeling courage, and THEN get it past senior editors and into the world. There's a LOT to Hef I learned in the documentary and it changed my view of him. I thought him one of those narcisstic sexist geeks in the sick IN crowd of stars who thought the Frug was hip...and wore shit-stink cologne...and had those bozo-wide huge Sonny Bono kind of collars...sort of like a syncophant and starfkker type but he was much much more than that. I'm sure the seedy stuff, not just sexy sexy DID happen at the Chi and L.A. clubs. Certain actors haunted the place on the prowl alla time; Rat Packers and Rat Packer Wannabes. But that would be missing the boat on what Hef really brought to the culture imo; and I have a LOT of respect for what he has contributed. It took a lot of confidence and vision intellectually imo. And the product was meaningful, and in some cases, actually historic.
