Acts from the '60s that are still touring
Posted by: marcovandereijk ()

There's only very few bands left that started in the 60's and are still touring.
Of course The Rolling Stones are. There is a lot of footage on this board that give us
a hint of their abilities. How are the others doing?

Roger Waters gathered a complete orchestra of young (well, some are not that young) players around
him and gives the audience a big show where images are so overwhelming, they wouldn't
notice which parts are live music and which parts are pre recorded.

Bob Dylan also managed to put a decent band together of crafted musicians who
manage to keep up with his unpredictable crooning. Great songs don't need a golden
throat to get sung.

Deep Purple plays their shows with just the five of them, the same personel
since Jon Lord passed away. Ian's voice has its limits these days, and loads and loads
of overdrive and distortion mask any imperfection, but the guys don't take their foot
of the pedal and make for an energetic show.

Paul McCartney does not hide away from showing his limits. A wall of sound
can be build from a synthezer these days, but Sir Paul is not afraid to reach for notes
that are out of his reach and he does not seem to be ashamed about it.

And The Who, what's left of them, also employ a lot of young personel to get
the show on the road. That said, Pete and Roger seem to be going stronger than a decade
ago. But they haven't brought us any new songs for a decade too.

I guess it's not complete, but going around Youtube, I must say, there's a lot to enjoy
for people like us, who love the old rockers, though the help of young musicians appears
to be a safety net for a lot of them.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Fleetwood Mac. Now back to their classic 'Phase 2' lineup, with Lindsey Buckingham & Christine McVie back on board. Both the latter's 2 voices are still strong.

However, it must be said that for every musician on stage, there appeared to be a back up musician playing the same instrument! When I saw them in Dublin 2 years ago, there was a back up drummer with his own kit. 2 drummers on stage - nuts!

Excellent indeed, I saw them in London in 2012 (one of my top 10 concerts) and then again in São Paulo in 2015, which was a good concert although they had some technical issues this time.

Dion Dimucci Born on July 18, 1939.

Still touring the world as recently as now.
Solo, or with bands and singers; at lunch counters...churches...
seriously good gigs and cruise chips too which he aces with joy...
He was a star with a huge hit (that STILL sounds great imo), at 16, in the fifties, with The Belmonts. a Hall of Famer fo sho...

When I heard first heard him in '61, (that would be last century folks) I was ten years old. RUnaround Sue got followed by The Wanderer.
That was it. That was it. I turned born and bred NYC rock and roller forever right there and then and knew it.
That one had massive 'chunka chunka' and don't even need the guitar; eye popping smiley
I mean slamload of rhythm-rock passion power was the most massive carpet bombs that ever got several millions in just one City simultaneouslyy go to Supreme Groove level all at the same time. He's all jazz singer when he starts that third verse cause the cat plays the sax w his voice like Van Morrision or something; when he scats, similar to Van in a way, it might as well be a sax solo devine.....van can do that with an actual sax and Dion can't; but Van can't get a Grammy for a solo acoustic blues album in his old age (and a special limited series DION Martin guitar model, that would cost a fortune if someone would let go of one....and van can''t do that; yet. he probs could; damn that Van is a mind-blower and he's still touring come to think of it so....excuse me for a sec here:

Van Morrison.

Ok I"m back; so i heard Wanderer after Sue and....that was it for a ten year old.

56 years later nothing's changed about that.

tho when i was a wee bit too young there was:
[www.youtube.com] (alternate take)
"R.I.P. Carlo Mastrangelo (October 5, 1938 - April 4, 2016) ~ He sang the great opening to this song.
R.I.P. Fred Milano, second tenor (August 22, 1939 – January 1, 2012).
Carlo is on the left in the photo; Freddie is on the right.?"

Dion still straps on that guitar and I'm still listening; country blues solo album w Grammy nominations, and awards? yep. Huge teen star in the fifties? yep. huge hit maker almost defining the eary sixties? yep. only american writer.singer except for Dylan on the Pepper cover? yep. When asked if he preferred the beatles or stones, very early on? and since? Stones. do i love him? yep.

Jeff Lynne

Was at the Wembley Stadium show in June. Loved it. Also saw him at the O2 in April last year. Ditto, although a short show at 1hour 20-30 minutes.

It has to be said that while most of the other acts mentioned so far have been touring relatively regularly since starting out way back, apart from fleetingly, Jeff Lynne had hardly performed to a live audience in nearly 30 years until his resurgence in the last 3 years.

I know, but I wanted to explore how these "old rockers" are coping with their limitations
of ageing.
