I think it was July 1966, their last show of the '66 U.S. Tour.
It's because they had the audacity not to break up like the Beatles did. In the same way that "When are you getting back together?" became the obligatory question you had to ask a Beatle, "When are you breaking up?" became the obligatory question you have to ask the Stones.

Looking back, it would have been funny if, starting in 1969, every time they were asked this question, they always said "yes"

Has anyone ever heard of any other band or artist being asked that question? It must be some arrangement the Stones and the media have.
