He's keeping busy!
Just saw him again two nights ago at the Santa Barbara Bowl (along with Walter Becker) as Steely Dan. Always a damn great show with a band filled with virtuoso's!

I've never seen him solo, but I like a lot of his solo material and would love to see him live. So far though, no SoCal dates listed.........

Fagen leads the group on keyboard and vocals... The Nightflyers includes Connor Kennedy (guitar, vocals), Lee Falco (drums, vocals), Brandon Morrison (bass, vocals) and Will Bryant (keyboards, vocals). An announcement notes that Fagen and the quartet have been working together the past few years near his home in Woodstock, N.Y.

I've seen Steely Dan three or four times in the last few years too ...

You're right:
Drummer Keith Carlock is a "monster" (meant in a good way)
Guitarist Jon Herrington is stellar
Freddie Washington grooves and funky on the bass

Yes to all the above. Not to mention the horn section - all given some serious solo spotlight, as well as the amazing backup singers' perfect harmonies.
As for Freddie Washington - during the band intro's: "the only band member from California" to thunderous applause! haha

Just got tickets for St. Augustine.

Finally finished off my concert bucket list by seeing ZZ Top, so starting another.

Also plan to see McCartney this summer (4th time)

In the Fagen-Becker partnership, how much credit goes to each man?

That question may never be answered - maybe like Mick/Keith

Is there really much difference between a Steely Dan show and Fagen solo? I saw Steely Dan last year and Becker shredded some guitar, but Fagen & Steely Dan always use top notch musicians so I'm not sure you'd notice.

I would think the main difference would be in the setlist. I'm sure he'll do a few SD tunes, but he'll probably skew heavily towards his solo stuff.

The setlist will be different, and the arrangements too probably.
No horns, no female backup singers.

Rehearsing with his band, The Nightflyers

I'm looking forward to see Fagen with a new band.

The current Steely Dan band is amazing and has perfected live Steely Dan. They can literally play anything in the Steely Dan catalog. They've been together far longer than the original Steely Dan band...

Maybe time to mix it up it up with a 4-piece of 20-somethings.

From The Wall Street Journal

"When the bottom fell out of the record business a bunch of years ago, it deprived me of the luxury of earning a living from records," he said. "I don't sell enough albums to cover the cost of recording them the way I like to. For me, touring is the only way to make a living."

...

Mr. Fagen also will perform new songs. "One is a noir thing I wrote recently called 'Hardboiled Life.' Another is about '50s film creeps ... guys who only went to see foreign films. People who now go to film school, I guess."

As the idea of a late-summer tour took hold, Mr. Fagen decided to add a fifth Nightflyer--Zach Djanikian, a friend of the other band members who sings harmony and plays saxophone and guitar.

"As a kid, I had what they now call ADHD and a bit of dyslexia, so I had trouble reading music. I learned the way most jazz musicians have since the 1940s--by imitating records."

Several weeks ago at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, Mr. Fagen and the Nightflyers rehearsed several songs from Mr. Fagen's solo albums (Miss Marlene, Green Flower Street, Countermoon and New Frontier). The band also took on Steely Dan songs (Green Earrings, Bad Sneakers, Home at Last and Dirty Work) and covers of the Rolling Stones' Beast of Burden and the Beatles' I'll Cry Instead.

Other cover songs are planned for the tour. "I put Chuck Berry's You Can't Catch Me in a minor key and changed the feel," Mr. Fagen said. "We're also doing the Grateful Dead's Shakedown Street. It's a really nice, funky tune."

I hope he can make a decent song out the mess that are Dead songs. The Dukes of September (Fagen/M.McDonald/Boz) did Thunderclap Newman's 'Something In the Air' a couple years back and it was great.

He's a married 69 year old! What the hell does he care at this point?

Going to the August 12 show in St. Augustine. First time seeing him.

Steely Dan is almost the anti-Stones (so precise, jazzy, intellectual, elitist, etc.), but I love their sound and they are a part of the soundtrack of my life. I am slightly more than a casual fan, but not a SD expert by any stretch.

Any thoughts or suggestions with those more familiar with the band/Fagen?

This is DF's first solo tour in many years. He's playing with a brand new group of younger musicians... so I don't really know what to expect, other than some new arrangements of SD and his solo stuff. Can't wait.

He's a performer on stage. No one wants to look at a trench mouth singing. Gross. That's what the hell. Geeez. Even Keith had his teeth fixed.

I'm looking at photos of him and I don't even see how his teeth are that bad. He's got a pretty prominent overbite but they're not mangled or rotting by any stretch.

Annnnnywaaaaay...I'd love to see Fagen and/or Steely Dan live. I just recently started listening to them and am very impressed.

Hmm, that is odd. He did have that domestic violence incident with his wife a couple of years ago, which was rather unexpected. Maybe he's in a bad place emotionally.

I just saw Steely Dan a few months ago and didn't notice any teeth missing nor were any of his teeth in bad condition whatsoever - same with when I saw them several years ago.

I love going to a Steely Dan concert. Fagen and Becker are so old and ugly you can buy a cheap seat, long as the sound system is good. Same with the Stones, really. I've seen them close up and don't need to ever again.
