OT: Music oriented cities and change

Interesting read on cities that have music as part of their image. New Orleans has had a major change in the city's fabric. Considering IORR has a worldwide fan base/membership, what places in your country or part of the world were/are part of your major music scene and is development changing the scene?

New Orleans music had a direct impact on Jamaican reggae. There's so many stylings of music in New Orleans, past and present, but the brass band life does indeed have a new generation coming up - every year.

Although the gentrification tag is uneven as a whole, New Orleans' biggest problem is going out to hear live music is equivalent to renting/watching a movie: some bands/artists play every week for months and years on end there's no need to go often.

Artists that want to make it big have to leave New Orleans.

But that's probably a common thing in a lot of places.
