how often is Ronnie in open G?

Keith is probably playing in Open G tuning about 80% of the time at a typical show. Is Ronnie usually in standard? Anyone know?

Yes, he mostly uses standard tuning except when playing slide in open E on tunes such as You Got Me Rocking, Rough Justice, You Got the Silver etc.

PS: When he plays pedal steel, he prefers Hawaii tuning (C6) or Nashville tuning (E9).

Seems that with the Faces, and still on his solo albums, he is in open tunings way more often. But I think it was way more Open D/E.
Speaking of - its about time for a Ron Wood solo album.

I highly doubt that, it's probably 50% or maybe even less. But you could be right.

If they play disc two of hot rocks, like most nights, I think pretty much all those tunes (except Sympathy perhaps) are open G, so that's almost 50% right there.

In 1978 there were only 4-5 open G-numbers. Not that many in 1975/76 or 1981/82 either – at least not 50%.

A typical 1981 setlist:

"Under My Thumb"
"When the Whip Comes Down"
"Let's Spend the Night Together"
"Shattered"
"Neighbours"
"Black Limousine"
"Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)"
"Twenty-Flight Rock"
"Going to a Go-Go" (first played in Louisville, KY, November 3)
"Let Me Go"

"Brown Sugar"

But the information that will surprise most of those that believe Keith = Open G is that in the 72/73 tours, with Exile just released, almost half of the songs in the set were standard tuning.

At least it wasn't in 1995. Could have been originally indeed. Not sure. Never played it myself.

I have read many conflicting reports. Was rocks off in 72 indeed standard? I know it was from 94 on. Just wondering.

Also played with the capo on the 4th fret. I think the record has it capoed at the 2nd fret.

Always in standard tuning - live and on record. The dark F sharp during the intro is impossible in open G.

I've never even thought it could be, but it looks like you're right. I thought he just had two of those guitars..

It's actually a song that's harder to play that way in open G than in standard tuning, so it begs the question why??
