Ed Sheeran has 16 songs in the UK Singles Chart top 20 this week, while he has also topped the UK Albums Chart with third record ‘÷’.

The singer-songwriter followed 2011’s ‘+’ and 2014’s ‘x’ with ‘÷’ last Friday (March 3). It has gone straight to number one with 672,000 combined chart sales this week, giving Sheeran the highest opening week for a male artist in UK history. It also makes the musician the third fastest-seller of all-time, behind Adele’s ’25’ (800,000) and Oasis’ ‘Be Here Now’ (696,000).

It has outsold the rest of the rest of the Top 500 albums combined.

Sheeran’s first two albums ‘x’ and ‘+’ are fourth and fifth respectively in this week’s Albums Chart, with Rag’n’Bone Man second with ‘Human’ and Stormzy’s ‘Gang Signs & Prayer’ at third.

Due to streaming figures being taken into consideration in the charts, Sheeran occupies the top six spots of the Singles Chart this week, as well as nine out of the top ten places and 16 of the top 20. His album’s lead single ‘Shape Of You’ is at number one, with ‘Galway Girl’ at number two and ‘Castle On The Hill’ third.

Sheeran told Radio 1’s Greg James of the news: “I never expected to have nine songs in the top 10 ever in my life so yeah, I don’t know, something’s gone wrong. But I’m definitely very, very happy about it.”

Meanwhile, Spotify has confirmed that Sheeran’s album was streamed 374,721,898 times on the service worldwide during its first week, with 73,906,189 of those streams coming in the UK. The figures mean that Sheeran has broken several records, including the biggest first week streams of an album worldwide.

Sorry, i just don't get the appeal of this guy.
I'll admit he is talented, just not my taste.

Yes talented, but not my cup of tea.
In some ways he reminds me of a young Dave Matthews, but with red hair.
Quite an accomplishment though!

Sounds like the Chart-Positions are bought by Warner Music - because the Music sounds ordinary, nothing special, could have been Take That / Robbie Williams 20 years ago ....

This is such rubbish! Keeping album stream listening statistics should not be an indicator of how good a record is. Im sure most of those streams/listens on Spotify were people who probably only listened to about 10 seconds of the song before going on to the next song and doing the same thing.

I was in other room when I heard him singing at the Grammy's. I thought it was Tracy Chapman.

I am sure there were plenty of people over 30 who were saying the very same thing
about The Rolling Stones in 1964.
Well, may not have said they were talented however.

I think he's OK, harmless. A red haired busker, playing his old acoustic guitar in a soldout concert in London, Wembley Stadion. Not the worst thing...

I think pop music in the late 1950s to early 1960s before the Stones and Beatles was possibly as crap in its own way as it is now. Currently it's either rap or watered-down something-of-nothing uninspired dross often with lines repeated endlessly. There are very few exceptions and Sheeran certainly isn't one of them.it's heart-warming to see the contempt some IORRians have for him.
As for the Stones having anything to do with him...I'll stop before I upset someone.

Nowadays, singles chart is all about streaming, there's no way an act over the age of 40 can get a Top 40 hit, except if your dead as Bowie or Prince.

i think a lot of young people, and this applies to other generations when they were young, do tend to listen to whats given to them and not so much what they would like, and i find people of my generation(born 1968) would look for music regardless of when it was recorded. the stones werent my generation, and neither was most of the music i like but, i heard that artists were legends so i sought them out to find out what made them legends, few young people do this, they listen to crap like ed sheeran, and before that, justin beiber, and they think its great, cos its on the radio and theyre mates are listening too. with all the access to media, youtube etc, i would be trying to find music from other generations to find good stuff but for some reason they dont.

thank god for the rolling stones.

1-19 on the list make for dire viewing.

With that nonsense said, I look at all genres that are popular and I watched with curiosity a TV special about this guy maybe two years ago, and he, by himself, no back up band, no drummer, no backing track, no sampled stolen track helping... he sold out Wembley Stadium 3-4 nights in a row. SOLD OUT, BY HIMSELF, PLAYING SOLO. Just him, his voice and guitar.

I didn't get the music, didn't like it, dont understand it... but it is what it is.

THEN... because I find it fascinating... an watched from the sidelines...

He took a break and walked away for a year or two. WALKED AWAY!!!

"They say" never do that when you are hot or people will forget fast.

His sound is not as bad as rap... his style is not my taste, but not overly obnoxious...

I agree on that, but one can only guess about the musical impact of the Stones in the early 6-tees if they had the looks of a church choir.
