Led Zeppelin: The Only Way To Fly by Richard Morton Jack (Lansdowne Books)

[lansdownebooks.com]

Received my copy. Absolutely amazing, stunning book.
Articles, reports, reviews, press releases, newspaper and magazine clippings, ads, posters, Flyers, photos…so many artifacts I have never seen before. The collective volume is simply overwhelming.
One of the very best, greatest books on Led Zeppelin ever published no doubt.
Bit costly but, trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

How long did it take The Stones to decide to continue after Charlie? Not a dig at them but some people have a predetermined notion when a band should call it quits. In my opinion the hardest person to replace is usually the singer, there's always plenty of great musicians out there as replacements. No disrespect but I don't know why someone is expected to end with their partners. Reminds me of married couples and such. The best type partner would want the other to carry on and be happy (I hope). So, whatever happens I hope we can get some more great music from these guys. Maybe some good times ahead.

Have to disagree. Yes, I hold some magic for original members and whatnot, but I think its about much more. There is a magic between specific groups of people. Sometimes you get it with multiple people, like the Stones, but a lot of times, especially when its a band like Zeppelin that was always just the 4 of them, its a moment in time. It was starting to fade even when Bonham was still alive! Plant and Bonham were CLOSE friends. I don't think that can be discounted. Plant looking back and seeing someone else there? I think that's harder to swallow that you think when the relationship is that deep. I understand people justifying bands existing for our enjoyment these days however they want, and obviously I'm doing the same on the other side, so there's probably a happy medium.

But I don't know. There's a period where you're creative and you're a collective, and then there's a time when you're not. If Zeppelin were gonna do anything again, it should have been before they were 80. If they waited this long, I'm just not sure how good it would be. Or frankly that we need it. I'd love Jimmy to do stuff, lord knows Robert does a ton. I'm happy and encourage them to continue creating, even together. But I don't think it needs to be under the banner of Zeppelin. They were a rare act that was classy and actually meant what they said. I'm personally happy they didn't go the route of AC/DC or The Who these days, or frankly even the Stones. Its a really short list that actually does it, Rush is the latest one I can think of, and I really admire it.

By happenstance, reading through this thread, seeing if there's anything else to offer... and, well, not only did The Rolling Stones get a drummer that Charlie approved of, AC/DC found an amazing drummer that, to my ears, is better than Phil Rudd yet alone anyone else.

And... Rush has announced shows for 2026 with a new drummer.

That's awesome.

Life goes on. Participate in change or don't.

Ian Astbury sang with The Doors because they asked him to.

"If not now, when?"

Imagine if the Stones said, "Well, we've done it, so we're done" in 1990.

Think of that:

NINETEEN NIGHTY. Done. Retired.

Given their lifestyles, regardless of royalties they make, ha ha: a reunion tour and, well, The Eagles did it.

Led Zeppelin... there was zero percent wonder if they'd ever do anything again after the O except for those that don't get it.

Why anyone would believe something on FaceBook 18 years later should delete their iorr identity.

Paul McCartey sang at Phil Collins' death bed.

Mick Jagger's last show ever.

People commenting as if they're true.

Some people truly believe that kind of crap.

But why not? They're the people with their phones in their faces while driving.

Robert Plant’s latest reincarnation, a “folk group” in his own word, Saving Grace will make their North American debut in Wheeling, West Virginia tonight — almost seven years after their low-key home turf debut in Bishops Castle, January 25, 2019. They are to play 15 shows in total until Valley Center, California, November 23.

Hope anyone who goes to see them enjoy Robert’s current musical adventure and have a good time. Your firsthand account will be appreciated!

Brilliant footage. Very stable camerawork all the way. Very enjoyable.
For anyone who won’t go see their show — this is a must see, perfectly helps you get a grip on what music Robert finds joy in playing now, in the year 2025, not 1975.
For those who are going — refrain yourself until you have caught the show. It makes you wonder less.

Enjoy the show tonight, TheBluesHadaBaby. May Saving Grace take you to the higher rock!

Cool to see him playing The Rain Song! Looks like a fun setlist, but I believe ticket prices were too rich for me this tour. Maybe I'll try to grab a last minute one.

In the presale my 5th row (albeit far right) seat was $80. $70 + fee. Afterwards I did see second market listings of > $1000... this was a 1,040 cap venue (Robert quipped, "I love these club gigs!").

But the scalpers of course ditched any remaining tix last minute. I talked to a guy last night who got in night-of for under $100. So, anybody without a ticket but in a tour city, I'd say that's definitely worth a try.

Tonight is DC, so for folks there, that'd be right now. Plant/Saving Grace play 8:30 pm sets.

My those two lads certainly get on, don't they? That was wonderful. A shame the conglomerate powers-that-be caved in to preasure and are taking away Stephen's show in May sad smiley

Two nights before that I was no Colbert, Plant ignored me and my Led Zep II and IV albums behind the Charlottesville theater... me and maybe seven others still there an hour-ten after the show. Security moved us out of the way of his car, and he didn't speak to or acknowledge anybody, just got in and was driven away. It was a very chilly ending to what otherwise had been a good night. (What we'd needed was adoring hot chicks in our little group... Robert'd have regarded us as worth 5 min. to sign a few things then, I think.)

The C'ville concert was excellent. I enjoyed how the strings imbued nearly every song with an underlying acoustic-zeppelin flavor.

I left the performance a little confused as to why he's plastered Suzi Dian's name on everything almost equal billing with his own. She's blonde, pretty, young (imagine how young when the group formed 2019), gracious, plays accordian, and sings with Robert perfectly fine. But I don't see remotely near an Alison Krauss level talent or potential in any of it, and think titling the tour Robert Plant's Saving Grace Band would have been more fitting. (I think her non-stage surname is Dingle. And she's married to the drummer. If I was that drummer I'd keep a sharp eye on Ms. Dingle's highly attentive mentor.)

But as for the show, yes, thumbs up The comment I injected on Setlist fm:
"Great show but I have to admit I was REALLY hoping for the encore Wheeling WV got. I.e. Four Sticks; Gallows Pole/Black Dog/Gallows Pole"

We got the same main set as WV did, but our encore was a Los Lobos song plus Four Sticks.

Finally, for the interested, the entire next night's show after Charlottesville is also on youtube:

Really enjoyed the Colbert interview. Seemed like they enjoyed each others company. Robert is a very cool and interesting guy. But it made me a little sad when he said he's at the end of his career, though I already heard him say that somewhere else recently. I'm going to borrow Keith's line, gold rings on him.

He said see you next time at the end of the Charlottesville concert... we were talking about that behind the theater waiting for him afterwards. What I suspect is that he does see Saving Grace as his last band of his career. But also that he enjoys performing -- enjoys being Robert Plant on stage -- so much, that he'll continue with it for years yet to come. That is, for as long as he can continue to put on good shows. And these are good shows.

Great interview with Colbert. Plant on his own is such an interesting artist. His work with Allison Krauss is such a great collection of music. There's a torrent, maybe utoob, of them doing an outdoor show in Vienna, Austria, if I remember correctly. Such a great watch and listen. He has shown he is so much more than Zep. I still feel Plant should have his own page on this site.

Thanks for the links to his brand-new interview.
The man is full of wit and clever quips as usual. And Stephen Colbert clicks with him really well.
Interesting that Robert calls the Saving Grace music ‘Anglicana’, and also delves into his fascination with Tolkien.

Sounds like all wasn’t well for you on Monday evening. Sorry to hear that.

At least, the show left you a good impression.

Honestly, this is the first time I’ve ever come across a negative remark of any sorts about Suzi Dian. All I have ever heard are voices of admiration without one exception. I for one think she is a brilliant co-vocalist and player. In the U.K., the group’s name is frequently presented as ‘Robert Plant presents Saving Grace featuring Suzi Dian’ on ads, posters and flyers.

Saving Grace didn’t play Zep songs prior to 2023 except snippets of In My Time Of Dying and Black Dog for teasing purpose. Then in 2023, they introduced four titles on the setlist, Friends, Gallows Pole, Four Sticks and The Rain Song. Ramble On is a 2025 addition. Not necessarily all of them have been performed at every gig. In D.C. the following night, they dropped Angel Dance (Los Lobos cover) and instead picked Down To The Sea from Robert’s 1993 Fate Of Nations album, leaving Gallows Pole/Black Dog (snippet) unplayed again.

If we believe setlist.fm, in Brooklyn, NY, last night Saving Grace gave only one song for the encore, Four Sticks.
It’s likely to be the case since they played for 1 hr 20 mins while the show length on the previous dates was 1 hr 25-30 mins, more or less.

Gallows Pole/Black Dog was back in Boston on Thursday night.
Four Sticks moved up in song order, played in the main set instead of…The Rain Song that was dropped.

You can’t always…you know.
