I cannot agree more, regarding Stairway To Heaven. As overplayed and over-analysed the recording may be, it’s an utter masterpiece of composition and performance. It’s utter perfection.

Side B of LZ IV is one of my all-time favourite album sides.

Right up there with side A of Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust, side B of Countdown to Ecstasy and side B of Tattoo You.

If you want a serious reply, I think the point is whether a particular title is connected with the lyrics, be it closely or remotely, rather than certain words or phrases appear in them and correspond between the two. Admittedly, the connection can be so subtle and abstract sometimes it is tricky to find it. I don’t think Four Sticks applies to any conceivable cases above, though.

On another ground —
Mick and Kurt, as far as I know, have not particularly explained why such and such songs are called this or that. On the contrary, Jimmy numerously did in regard to the origin of the title, Four Sticks, which is daft.

Okay, another debate, no more Cheerios (maybe some fillers).

As I posted above, the song order of LZ lV (AKA ‘Four Symbols’) has never convinced me, and particularly Side B at that. Sorry to say this — for me, it is an example of inaptly sequencing tracks. Starting the side with Misty Mountain Hop and then Four Sticks, two less than spectacular songs by the group’s standard and the bottom of the Zep lV family (in my opinion), only adds up to the weakness of the album.

Here is my attempt of reinventing LZ lV by changing the song order:
Side A — 1. Rock And Roll 2. Black Dog 3. Four Sticks 4. Stairway To Heaven (Total running time: 21mins 19secs)
Side B — 1. Misty Mountain Hop 2. Going To California 3. Battle Of Evermore 4. When The Levee Breaks (Total running time: 21mins 1secs)

The total running time of the original album is, Side A = 22mins 8secs, Side B = 20mins 12secs. The rearranged song order would also be more balanced in terms of running time shared by each side and theoretically contributes if slightly to the improvement of the audio quality of Side A, especially Stairway To Heaven that is placed in the most inner position of the vinyl where the sound deteriorates as compared to the outer.

[N.B. Total running time is according to Wiki article [en.wikipedia.org] and does not include between-song intervals.]

Speaking to the new issue of Uncut magazine, Robert said: "As an English singer, I usually reach for the normal pop/rock stuff that I might have done with Zep on 'Thank You' or 'Little Drops Of Rain'.

"But Alison comes from a different world.

"She is always at pains to tell me that while was flying my kite in the back of a van she was seven years into fiddle competitions.

"She never went to prom because she was in the corner harmonising when I was already becoming a rock 'n' roll cliche at a very early age.

"She coaches me and gives me alternatives to bolster her vocal.

"She hears the way you can embellish a melody.

"I was learning all that Chitlin' Circuit phrasing in the mid-60s, so I never knew about strict melodies.

"I was very happy to put myself into the position of being a student to see if I could do it."

The 'Stairway to Heaven' hitmaker recently referred to their unique material as “dark and spacey”.

He said: “The wonderful thing about it is that it’s nameless, and it has its own personality. You could say it’s kind of a little bit retro-sounding. It’s almost an archival study of pretty far-out spacey music. I think you could call it dark and spacey.”

I saw Alison Krauss and Union Station open for Willie Nelson a few years ago without not knowing a ton about her. Man, did they blow me away! She is an underrated gem.

I have seen her at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in SF. Its a great free music festival. Also have seen a member of her band the dobro player Jerry Douglas many times. Very talented.

Sorry to mention here the name of evil — Eric Clapton, while he was on tour in Japan in November 1999, referred to Krauss’ then latest release, Forget About It, as his current favorite album to play, which spurred me to buy the CD. I liked it then, but sometime later found myself having left it unheard for quite a while. I bought Raising Sand when it came out, same as above. I still hope to catch the duo live next year as I heard a good reputation from the previous tour.

I saw Krauss once, when she supported Paul Simon at the Hard Rock Calling 2012 in Hyde Park. Decent at best if my memory serves, but probably unfair to judge her solely from that slot. I’m ready to give her another chance any day.
