OT ~ Rock Hall nominees include Jett, GnR, Chaka, the Cure

By Chris Talbott THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Long ago, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts professed their love for rock ’n’ roll. It’s time to see if the feeling runs both ways.

The iconic rock act is on the list of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees for the 2012 class released Tuesday. Women who rock feature prominently among first-time nominees. Joining Jett, whose “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” remains a classic rock standard 30 years after its release, are sister act Heart and Rufus with Chaka Khan.

They’re joined by Guns ‘N Roses, hip-hop pioneers Eric B. & Rakim, glum glam goths The Cure and the Small Faces/the Faces, which includes Rod Stewart. Bluesman Freddie King and The Spinners are also first-time nominees on the ballot for the hall’s 2012 class.

Previous nominees up again include the Beastie Boys, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donna Summer, Laura Nyro, Donovan and War. It’s an eclectic group, running from lush British folk to classic early beats and bone-crushing power rock.

An act must have released its first single or album 25 years ago to qualify for induction. More than 500 voters will determine who makes the hall. New members will be inducted at a ceremony at the hall of fame in Cleveland on April 14.

Guns ‘N Roses is the headliner of the first-timers group. The L.A. bad boys were easily the largest hard rock act of the 1980s and early ’90s, featuring siren-voiced lead singer Axl Rose and Slash playing muscled riffs on lead guitar. GnR’s “Appetite for Destruction” was a game-changing album and they went on to sell more than 100 million albums. Their iconic hits such as “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Paradise City” remain radio staples.

The leather-clad and tough-as-nails Jett was an early icon for women rockers. A founding member of the all-female band the Runaways, she went on to become a chart-topping success after forming the Blackhearts in 1982.

Heart similarly made an indelible mark on the rock scene of the 1970s and ’80s. Among the first women to front an aggressive rock band, singer Ann Wilson and her sister, guitarist Nancy Wilson, cut some of the era’s most memorable songs, from “Barracuda” to “Magic Man,” and inspired a generation of women along the way.

Then a teen, Khan burst on the scene with the Chicago-based Rufus in the 1970s. She defied easy categorization, moving easily among R&B, rock and disco before going onto an enviable solo career.

I always thought they get this award too late. 15 years from your first success should be enough. Most acts don't last more than 10 years anyway. Are there any money involved in this? It should be, acts like Joan Jett or Chaka Khan probably needs them by now.

...it is redonkulous to call it the Rock and roll hall of fame, it should be called "The Music Museum in Cleveland".... and it should not be getting all this publicty. It is not a true reflection rock and roll worldwide. It is not a true hall of fame, it is basically a tourist trap attraction.

It is mostly about selling tickets, if it were really about the music the website would be a lot better. Has anyone tried looking at the website? It is basically a teaser to get you to pay $22.00 to visit the tourist attraction.

Each year there are more and more voices about how stupid the whole concept is.

The only reason they let in non rock groups like Abba and Madonna is they are trying to sell tickets to a wider range of potential customers. I suppose there is nothing wrong with running a business like that, but it should NOT act as if it speaks for all rock and roll music world wide, when it is simply a "Music Museum in Cleveland".

I had the place to myself one day in early January a few years back. It's a great place to wander around and find little jewels, like a handwritten note from Bobby Darin to his agent when he got recognized with an award in the early 60s, "It's about @#$%& time." The Stones section really needs beefing up. This should be the year to have a major Stones exhibition there. I try to separate the weirdness of the selections with the nice place the actual museum is. Brian's mellotron is there.

Maybe there should be a one hit wonder section, then Jett would qualify along with the Knack and many many others.

Son, you are ill informed or uneducated. From Joan's early days (1975) with The Runaways (when she was 16 ) to her concert last week (2011) with the Blackhearts, Joan Jett is far from a one hit wonder, not to mention that she has a lot of great songs including "I Love Rock 'n' Roll", "Crimson and Clover", "I Hate Myself for Loving You", "Do You Want to Touch Me", "Light of Day", "Bad Reputation", etc etc etc.

She is the queen of three chord rock, nuthin fancy, no one ever accuses Joan of being the female Jeff Beck, and I dont think that is what she wants....

Joan is just a good ole rock and roller, doing what many have failed to do... she has had a long long long profitable career playing rock and roll for a living and she is still doing it. Sure she plays the casinos and fairs, but she is making good money doing it.

Making a good living playing rock and roll, how cool is that? She has my utmost respect. I have seen her play live 5-10 times, and she has always been great, delivering the goods and appearing to have a lot of fun doing it... and fun is a good thing to have.... keep on keeping on Joan, you rock....

I would be willing to bet $5bucks she couldnt give a sht about this "music museum thingy in Cleveland".

Just because you can hang around for 30 years, it doesn't make you a legend.

So there is no prizemoney? It's basically just a commercial enterprise to cash in on retired stars?

As far as I can tell it is nothing but a tourist attraction, doing everything it can to sell as many $22.00 admission tickets to the widest range of the public, catering to all music, and rap, tastes.... "Rock and Roll" should not even be in the name... it should be called something like "Modern music (and rap) museum of Cleveland"

1) I doubt Robert Johnson is insulted by anything these days
2) Robert Johnson is modern compared to Ludwig van Beethoven

I thought quite the opposite...I'd prefer to see how the music stands the test of time rather than throw in everyone who had a #1 single 10 years ago.

I enjoyed it too when I went 10 years ago. Had a special John Lennon exhibit taking up the entire top floor.

Many people here in the UK don't even consider The Rolling Stones to be "Rock and Roll"... & I guess they're NOT in the strictest sense.

I saw Joan a couple of summers ago here in central Virginia, US at an outdoor show. It was an extremely hot humid evening, and out comes Joan,head-to-toe in leather and heavy makeup, and absolutely rocked the place. She started-out with the Runaways' "Cherry Bomb", played all of her solo hits and covered the Stooges ("I Wanna Be Your Dog") and the Pistols. By about the second song her eye shadow was running down her face, dripping onto the stage. She never slowed down for a second. The whole show was fantastic!

If a Rock Hall of Fame must exist, Joan Jett belongs in it, IMHO.moody smiley

thumbs upagreed, they should consider dropping the "hall of fame" part... and they should drop the "rock and roll" part.
