1981 Tour: The Stones request American Cheese & Bologna
Posted by: uhbuhgullayew ()
Date: September 26, 2011 21:38

From Rolling Stone mag:

Q to Barry Fey who presented the OCT 3-4 shows in Boulder, CO: What about backstage? Was there anything special in the catering rider?

A: They specifically asked for American cheese and bologna. And they wanted coffee and some dry French red wine. Very simple fare.

I wonder if this was for the crew...or backup musicians?

Stones themselves were quite picky about food. Keith loved crepes Suzette etc.

Dutch food?
Kaas, kaas, kaas, kaas & kaas!

And if you eat it long enough, it gets to your head and you´ll become - you know what?

Just couldn´t resist - my ancestors came from Holland 400 years ago, so I must be one of those myself.

Having had Dutch food, Mathijs, you have no room to talk. Have you ever HAD American food?

Sure I had American food, it proved impossible to avoid!

But what Dutch food did you have? Aside from some local specialities, Dutch food doesn't exist per se, it's basically made up from French, Italien, German and Indonesian cuisines.

I'm sorry but I can't believe they asked for American cheese! No offence but when they could have had French, Dutch, or English cheeses flown not to mention all the other wonderful European varieties.

Maybe the order was for the road crew to go with their burgers!

Unfortunately, the best dutch food is no more. No more roasted dodo, dodo curry, dodo 'n' chips, dodo pie...

All I know is everything in The Netherlands needed salt and pepper.

...That's probably why about 60% or more of the chefs & restaurant owners (in the big cities) in Holland are Belgian/ Flemish... and the other 40% claims to be influenced by Belgian cooking...
(which is, basically, not only similar to, but very much the origin of that world-widely renowned French cuisine... The first 'French' cooking book/ manuscript ever (to this date, off course), dated approx. 14th or 15th century if I'm not mistaken, was originaly from - & therefor found in - Flanders.
And here's another goody: 'French fries' DON'T mean they're "from France"; it comes from the verb 'to french' - to slice and/or cut up in little pieces.)

What's with all this food snobbery? American food can be great. And I know some four-star French chefs who'd agree with me (and one who has praised In N Out Burger to me because of its fresh ingredients). Julia Child loved McDonald's French fries.

Yes,I've heard about 'The quality you can taste" winking smiley
It's a good concept for sure but you can't say that hamburgers plus fries plus ice cream plus sweet drinks can be compared to the European food.
It's a load of calories .

I love eating hamburgers at Mc Donalds here .You can have cherry tomatos intead of the fries .And I never take a dessert if I get a Coke .

I didnt want to go here, because of the usual suspects and their standard anti-American comments, but being as they already went there... imuho American cheese is the nastiest crap EVER invented. I would like to beat the azz of the smartazz, jokeplayer/prankster who named it, what kind of joke was that? ...fk that.

With that said, there is plenty of great American food... Kansas City strip steak, Maine lobser, Alaskan king crab, Kansas City barbeque, Chicago Pizza, New England Clam Chowder, Southern fried chicken, New Orlean Cajun... DUH, the list is long and delicious.. and I am not talking fast food/ chain food crap, but anyone who waves an arm and says all American food is bad, just does not know.... but that never stops some people here from from speaking as an expert....anyway...

American cheese, that name is a prank, and I am sure that is why the thread was started... ha ha ha ha so funny... that crap is not cheese... I dont even know what it is it... but it is not cheese... yeeeech.

of course... If anyone likes it, I dont mean to insult you for that, like anything you want... I just wish it was not called American cheese. call it yellow blurpit, or something, just not American cheese... that name like a joke on us... fk that.

I was at those shows. I think I saw some bologna on the side of the stage. Of course the whole stage was pink and I was stoned out of my mind so it could have been anything.

There are certainly some fine restaurants in the USA.

One of my favorite lines about American food came last year at the US Open. Frenchman Julien Benneteau was on court, playing for 4+ hours in the heat & humidity when he retreated to the back of the court & vomited - due to the extreme conditions.

It was reported that a French journalist quipped: "That's what happens when a Frenchman has to eat American food."grinning smiley
