Jimi Hendrix jams on Dick Cavett's show

The first tune is hear my train a comin done with Dick Cavett's house band. Funky and cool as the canadian snow. Jimi doesn't overpower them but he shines.

The second is with the newly formed group who were as yet un-named but were introduced as the Experience. with Juma Sultan on congas and Billy Cox on Bass, Mitch kept his seat as the drummer. This version of Izabella is fantastic, and that guitar is sweet! How could the Stones not be influenced by this man from Seattle, WA, USA. Thank you Jimi thank you. peace.

Very nice, thanks for posting.

Here's Mitch Mitchell 10 months earlier, Dec. '68, with the Dirty Mac:

Yeah MKC , well said, I loved the cut to present day Dick talking about the Jimi interview so long ago. He has a Keith-like bohemian attitude towards it all. Very refreshing in this post-nine eleven fear factory we are living in. I am a new Dick Cavett fan. It was on past my bedtime during the years it aired. peace.

Great!

That second line-up is actually the one Jimi used for most of his 1970 studio recordings:

Jimi - guitar, vocals
Mitch - drums
Billy Cox - bass
Juma Sultan - percussion

I remember a statement by Keith,Jimi has been mainly responsible for a new feedback breed...
something like that, in fact not very polite...
damned, digged around but couldn´t figure out the exact source or quote yet...

guitar on this clip is much too low in the mix.
but thanks for posting - it's surely something else!

Guitarists are like gun slingers and Jimi was certainly a "threat" in that respect to the established Keith Richards. Keith was probably on the throne about then. The scene (you've probably seen) with Keith and Jimi backstage where Keith was showing Jimi his pexiglss guitar is priceless. They were both in Love with Linda Keith at one time and Jimi asks "Have you seen Linda around , man?" Keith says something like "yeah last time I was in the islands" or something Fishing off the same dock those two boys were. classic as it gets there. peace.

Yeah but I interpret that encounter as Jimi the rock n roll lover man No 1 asking Keith about the girl who left Keith for Jimi. Not like they "shared" memories of her.

asking Keith about the girl who left Keith for Jimi.

Another reason Keith would be tempted to slight Jimi with a comment like the feedback one above. peace.

Incorrect to say that Keith and JH both "in love" with Linda.

Keith ALWAYS treated Jimi with respect.

When I began posting on IORR some five years ago it was because I love the music of The Rolling Stones.

Lately, there are so many nutty topics and posts here that are simply not accurate. I understand that a lot of it comes from internet misstatements and on occasion I have tried to get things back to actual facts. However, because I knew Jimi so well and also was acquainted with Keith Richards, doesn't mean that I want to make being a member of IORR a daily job.

Also, I believe in the music but I also believe in everyone's right to privacy in their personal lives. So...I am going to spend less time here and more on recuperating from serious back surgery. Sitting at a computer is harmful to my health at this time. And recreating those glorious and sometimes painful days in the Sixties and Seventies is really not my mission in life.

Gulp. well I appreciate your honesty stonesrule. I can promise that if you tell us just one story about Jimi to warm our hearts and minds, I will forever give up nutty posts and double check the accuracy before I spout off on the keyboard on the IORR site, and I'm not alone. You could help give the board some of the cool thread and accuracy that it has been obviously lacking.

As far as the back surgery goes, I sincerely hope you recover well and I will send some healing thoughts your way. btw: "Dragon Naturally Speaking" software can help by allowing you too dictate into just about any computer application, gets rid of the whole keyboard typing thing pretty well. It actuially works. peace.

Instead of asking for a story, you could read/buy/borrow her book about Jimi Hendrix; I can highly recommend it

Ok I'll go buy it. Can you help a bit and provide the title of the book? I know it's probably on previous threads or the only one female penned or something but I'd appreciate it. Thanks. peace.

Thanks Erik, That'll do. I get the feeling from Stonesrule's comments that when she said she knew Jimi SO well, that she probably know him in some sort of romantic context. The quick reaction to my comment about Jimi being "in love" with Linda Keith at one time (we know from Life that Keith was), and her calling Jimi "Rocks No. 1 Loverman". In which case her good stories are probably too good and personal to tell on this public board. I'm glad she's here anyway and hope she recovers from her surgery. peace.

There must be other footage from that Dick Cavett show appearance because I distinctly recall Jimi sitting with Cavett. Cavett announces that his next guest is very tired from traveling and touring but agreed to come on the show anyway. Cavett says to Jimi that he is regarded as the greatest guitar player and Jimi says humbly 'how about the best guitar player sitting in this chair?"

At one point Cavett teases Jimi by asking him if he ever gets the outfit he's wearing back from the Dry Cleaners with too much starch?

I've seen bits and pieces from the interview from the '71 or '72 film simply called Jimi Hendrix.

More like the best who ever sat in a chair, any chair, high chair, throne, you name it. Jimi was the best, hard to argue that point. Eddie Van Halen made a run for that seat (pun intented) in 1978 and almost made it but alas, was beaten back by cocaine, meth, and cigarrettes. He isn't doing to well right now, cancer from his 3 pack a day habit. I've got some funny EVH stories for another thread perhaps. I hope he holds on and takes it to the next level, whatever that is.

I loved the part in this interview where he is talking about drugs and says, "well it's like coffee, you drink it everyday and it becomes something else". Don't I know it as I sit here typing with my second daily mug of Peet's Garada blend close by and talking to me. peace.

Also check out Jimi on the Tonight Show 1969. When Johnny Carson told Jimi he must be the greatest guitar player ever, Jimi replied "No, there's someone better than me,this cat down in Texas named Billy Gibbons, he's the greatest".

That is cool but maybe its a good thing Jimi didn't live long enough to see them become what they were in the 90's. Commercial CRAP. Leg's and all that stuff. He would have hung his head like I did. peace.

Sure, and he said the same thing about Rory Gallagher, Phil Keaggy, Leslie West and 100 other guitar players, there are about a billion variations of that story and they are all false.

Well if it was part of a Carson show, the proof of that should be out there somewhere, you tube or whateva. To be complimented by a great is better than being great. I can see the lure of the story for guitar players. Funny I did hear the Phil Keaggy version of it by mouth in LA some 20 odd years ago! Maybe some A&R man made it up. peace.

Jimi was on various occasions complimentary about other players. He found it embarassing when people kept praising him as "the best."

Jeff Beck was the player Jimi admired the most. He told me so repeatedly and I believe Beck was aware of his feelings. They were...are originals.
