Significant dates for me are 12th July 1962 first performance by The Rolling Stones. In Kingston-upon-Thames,my hometown, they played The Cellar Club in Ashdown Road on 12th September 1963.Just a semi-detached house with a cellar.Capacity about 120 .Didn't have a clue that gig was on.Only aged 11 then.On 13th February 1964,only 5 months later, they played Kingston Granada cinema that I did know about.Mid-week gig and Ma said 'You're not going.Homework to do.' Great days. winking smiley

Pointless marking the band's history if you're going to pretend they didnt exist for the year prior to releasing their first record.

our position is clear and (as usual) two-fold:

1) it is pointless to pretend that the really important date, spiritually
and ontologically, is anything other than October twenty-something 1961,
when Mick and Keith linked their forces and fates forever.

2) it is pointless to pretend that any activity by this band in the
immediate future could have anything other than results not in keeping
with their glorious history. give keith some time to get it together.

and throwing in a third-fold just because:

3) every famous band has origins that can be disputed. for example,
take superheavy. was it the day stewart had his epiphany on the mount,
and called jagger, or was it the day they first gathered without having
a clue what they would even play, or is it the day the post-production
work on the album was completed? that is why the hall of fame set an
indisputable standard. as mick said, more or less: you can put up a plaque
here and there starting the end of october 2011 but we'll decide if and
when and how this thing gets celebrated.

The Little Boy Blue (?) or so called home recordings: Beautiful Delilah, Carol, Little Queenie, You Can't Judge and more, some tracks could be even from 61, but you recognize the band immediately.

In addition here the 17 tracks they recorded in 62 before Bill and Charlie joined in according to Marton Elliott, of course I heard (and we all I think) only few from this recordings or versions:

1. Around and Around
2. Little Queenie
3. Beautiful Delilah
4. La Bamba
5. On Your Way to School
6. You're right, I'm Left, She's Gone
7. Down the Road Apiece
8. Don't Want No Woman
9. I Ain't Got You
10. Johnny Be Goode
11. Little Queenie (2)
12. Beautiful Delilah (2)
13. Reelin' And Rockin'
14. Bright Lights Big City
15. You Can't Judge ...
16. Soon Forgotten
17. Close Together

Brian & Stu aren't on the Little Boy Blue home recordings, & (as far as I'm aware) the last two remain unheard. So the only evidence we have of Mick, Keith, Brian & Stu playing together prior to Charlie & Bill joining is one incomplete (& poor quality) song.

Didn't The Stones sell merchandise with the slogan "est. 1962"?
To place the 50th anniversary in January 2013 would be ridiculous then.
But maybe it fits better in Jagger's superheavy timeframe...?

Oh mates, never ending ... If Keith, Mick and Brian and Stu together are no Rolling Stones in 62 without Bill and Charlie, why are Keith, Mick and Charlie Rolling Stones now without Bill and Brian and Stu?

From Rolling Stones.com today

So 1962 + 50 = 2012

I think arguments can be made for the October 1961 date, the Date Brian had the ad in the paper for the band, the date (known or not) that Mick and Keith walked in to meet Brian and Stu, and of course the first gig in July of 62. To me, saying it's not the stones until Charlie and Bill join is no different than saying that the Stones ended when Bill quit.

Mick and Keith ARE the Stones, and since the first gig is the only date we know for sure, it works for me.

At least they didn't pull a Skynyrd... which they obviously couldn't do now if they wanted to anyway.

Well, thanks for all the input/info, it's all got very complicated, so I'll stick with the date I originally thought was the correct one!

JULY 12th 1962

Cheers
