Another older thread that has come up.

As to EMOTIONAL RESCUE, whereas the last five songs of the album to me express various kinds of negative feelings in a most fascinating way, this somewhat odd song immediately preceding those five, is one of their few overtly compassionate songs. Whether it is a "clever" song or not, I really don't know, and I don't care. I like the song's Latin American flavour, and, for all the sentimentality and sincerity involved, seemingly too much, I can see the basis for some to react against it, but to me not ending up that way, I quite the contrary find "Indian Girl" very moving. A smaller hidden outright gem, like so many others spread about their career.

Not a fan of the lyrics.

Listening to it with out vocs. changes the whole thing.

Yeah, it does change the whole thing - the lyrics are the song.

Anyone interested in the "Castro" and "He's fighting in the war in the streets of Masaya" references in the song should read this article >>> [www.newrepublic.com]

Excellent find T5,
The song has real context about a very complex subject.
I believe this is Mick's best political song ever, in that it is political, its lyrics steeped in historical context, but also foretelling a catastrophe (the Sandinistas did become another Cuba-style oppressor. And this was when the Clash and others were celebrating them as true liberators like something out of a French novel. Mick, in his role as doubting Thomas, sees the danger of the revolutionary romance.
There is so much going on here, but on the surface, its seems simplistic: the poor, downtrodden people, the rag-tag rebels fighting against the monolithic enemy, and then rising up against it only to become what they rebelled against.
Mick knew what he was talking about, and the song is dismissed by those who know nothing about its roots in history.

Honestly, I used to hate this song, but more and more listens have led me to kind of enjoy it now. That "lesson number 1.....life just goes on and on" burrows into my brain for a day or two after I listen to it.

This song pretty much went over people's heads in 1980, and so did it's big brother, 'Undercover of the Night' in 1983. They just wanted the Stones to recycle Chuck Berry licks and the Stones refused. Of course they pretty much quit after that, until 'Highwire', which was a bit of dud, and 'Sweet Neocon', which pissed off, of all people, Neocons.

I'm thinking this was the inspiration for Indian Girl.

Very inspiring!

Please Mister Gringo, please find my father
And I say: Lesson number one, that I learned while I was young
Life just goes on and on getting harder and harder
Little Indian girls, from Nueva, Granada

Ma says there's no food, there's nothing left in the larder
Last piece of meat was eaten by the soldiers that raped her
Lesson number one that, that you learn when you're young
Life just goes on and on getting harder and harder
Life just goes on and on getting harder and harder
Little Indian girls, from Nueva, Granada
Little Indian girls, from Nueva, Granada
Yes, I saw them today, it's a sight I would say
They're shooting down planes with their M-16 and with laughter
Mr. Gringo, my father he ain't no Che Guevara
And he's fighting the war on the streets of Masaya
Little Indian girl, where is your father?
Little Indian girl, where is your momma?
They're fighting for Mr. Castro in the streets of Angola

Most appalling song they ever recorded? Gimme a break. Too Much Blood and most of Dirty work, like Winning Ugly are much worse.
Indian Girl is a nice political ballad with a nice acoustic feel. I don't mind it at all. A nice summer song.

<<'Sweet Neocon', which pissed off, of all people, Neocons.>>

If you read the lyrics, that was the intent.

You call yourself a Christian
I think that you're a hypocrite
You say you are a patriot
I think that you're a crock of shit

WTF is a summer song?

ER is a summer album. Came out during the summer and a lot of the songs have that summer feel. Summer Romance for one! And Indian Girl. Sound of the tropics.

I suggest to realize a compilation entitled "Their Finest Desasters". "Indian Girl" is surely shining in this category ...

I knew the second this thread resurfaced that it would be controversial. Why such a sweet, of its time, Rolling Stones ballad would engender such hatred from some corners is confusing, but amusing. It's certainly one of the better songs on the lightweight Emotional Rescue album.

I understand some just being bored by the song, subject or whatever.. or uninspired by the musical aspects etc..
But the 'worst-Stones-song-ever-in-the-history-of-Stones-songs' is funny to me.
Politics? The correlation to Bianca and her politics? Both tend to be polarizing topics... Maybe they think the Indian Girl is a commie..? Or just the spector of the Stones not singing about ass?
Or maybe they just get annoyed when those of us who love it, like me, praise it. Or maybe they just don't understand or care what the song is about and they dismiss it.
I guess I would be insulted if someone (like me) suggested I didn't like a song because I was too uninformed to understand it...
Who knows? I do know that if I was uninformed on this song's historical and political context, it's just rich-man Mick singing about poor people..and it loses a lot its power.

Lyrically it is interesting and I admit I dismissed it for the most part of 30 years too. With some of the facts others have brought it up, it may not be as bad as I thought. But, really, what do we expect out of these guys? People are appalled when they sing about chicks because they are too old for that, or people don't like if the subject is controversial, they don't like if it's not in the context of sounding like 'Start Me Up'. Is it any wonder the guys have given up writing anything, the public is too damn hard to please and unwilling to let go of their own personal biases.

Totally agree. Nothing like the dreck of some of Dirty Work and many of the lame. forgettable paint-by-numbers hack jobs that have appeared on every LP since Doodoo Lounge. By those standards Indian Girl is quite good.

Yes, another reason to find the song interesting. 'Worst Stones Song Ever?' Puh-lease. 80% of Dirty Work and Voodoo Lounge and Undercover are worse than Indian Girl, not to mention a few select cuts on Satanic Majesties. Hell, Indian Girl isn't even the worst thing on the Emotional Rescue album.

I like the song, but I have to admit it sort of grew on me. Didn't use to like it so much.
But saying it's their worst ever, seems impossible. Although I can see the reasons why people don't like it (e.g. schmaltzy or fake-latin or "political" ), they have done much worse in all these senses (schmaltzy: Blinded By Love or Streets of Love, fake-latin: Sweethearts Together, "political": Sweet neocon, for instance).
I think the schmaltz works, somehow, the latin ends up kinda cute, the rhythm has something about it which makes it work, and the "politics" is sufficiently ambiguous to not make it sound preachy or downright silly (again, unlike "sweet neocon" ).
Just try listening to it again and again, and it will grow on you. Something which would be impossible for their all-time worst "Back To Zero" or "Sing Together" or nonsense like that. (Or that ridiculous wordplay of "in for me"/"infamy", another example of really cringeworthy)

I always thought this was the Stones take on the Willy Deville/Mink Deville sound.
It's ok, I don't turn it off when comes on.
