Such a beautiful, soulful instrumental. A hidden classic, if you ask me. Anyone know any details about this one?

Sure sounds like it's from the Some Girls or probably more so the Emotional Rescue sessions (based on the drum sound at least for it being possibly from the ER sessions).

One of my favorite instrumentals. Such a beautiful tune. It's so strong that it doesn't even need a vocal.

RCA Studios, Hollywood August-September 1978

There are two takes in circulation.

Always got the impression these sessions were done to 'stockpile' some basic tracks that the rest of the band could finish at a later date if Keith had to go to jail (his trial was coming up in October 1978)

From [www.rollingstonesnet.com]
I'll Let You Know (6:56): This great instrumental first surfaced on the classic "(In Tune With) Jam" LP from the early eighties. There is something about this track that takes me to a different time and place. The level problem is corrected on this tape source. This track also shows up on the Faces unauthorized CD titled "Ooh La La Demos" (TFR-16972) on track 1.

The fact that theyre both widely available on bootlegs ?

One version starts with a piano intro as opposed to a guitar intro.

I really would like you to state your source of info, e.g. reference CDs, books etc.

If you want a source, try nzentgraf.de and then look under August/September 1978.

Aeppli lists it as two mixes of the same take - with a different pedal steel.

[aeppli.ch]

Either way, there are two 'versions' in existence.

Do you have the piano-intro version?

Re: I'll Let You Know
Date: September 9, 2011 17:52

That's the alleged piano-intro version since you haven't actually heard it yet.

well I understand why this number is not an official one.
Come on, there are only two chords during 7 minutes !

The piano intro version is only 4 minutes...maybe that would be good for release.
I love this song very much! It was almost my screen name, but I loved another song a bit more.

What are your reference CDs?

MY reference CD's? I dont buy bootleg Cd's so I wouldnt claim to be an authority on what bootleg every song is on - others would be better placed to do so. Most of the material I have pre-dates the bootleg CD era. Some of it has never made it to commercially released CD/LP's. The version posted above - if you follow the link I provided - is on 'The Harder They Come' amongst others. I dont know what the 'piano' version is on (if its on any CD) but I probably have it on a tape somewhere. However, if Zentgraf and Aeppli BOTH accept that two versions exist, then thats good enough vindication for me.

The source of this track is a tape shared on Dime 3 years ago. To my knowledge it has never been on a CD release. It is on a few fan releases.

It does not have the amazing Telecaster you hear in the other version. This is the electric piano, Charlie and Ronnie on pedal steel only. It completely breaks down at the 2:43 mark and then slowly picks back up.

Still, a fun rarity and proof of 2 versions.

Here is a quick MP3 of it so you can hear.
I will try uploading the FLAC again. It will take 17 minutes.
