The Beach Boys clearly win for both most by a group, and most in a song.

It can be very hard to tell their voices apart, but I can hear Carl, Mike, Al, and Bruce taking leads in "Add Some Music." I hear Brian in the harmonies, but I'm not sure if he took any of the leads. I didn't hear Denny on a lead.

The Temptations and Beach Boys would have done it regularly. The Band too.

The Temps had four regular lead vocalists - five, technically, although Otis Williams didnt sing lead too often.

The Who had three lead vocalists. And occasionally four. On their second album, "A Quick One" all four of them sing lead on at least two songs.

If SuperHeavy keeps recording, they could soon set the record for
how many different songs have four vocalists singing distinct lead lines.

Dennis sang lead on many songs. the great Little Bird, Forever, Never Learn Not to Love, Be With Me, You Are So Beautiful, for example.

Sloan and Ween both have 4 lead singers. Traveling Wilburys as well.

The Band's "We Can Talk" was from 1968 and features the three singers sharing the lead and I think the 3 of them sing solo. And then in the 70's one of the best examples of three singers sharing the lead, "Acadian Driftwood".

I'm not sure about Denny either, but that is Brian on the "...I close my tired eyes" section of "Add Some Music." There are hard core experts who still can't always tell the difference between lines sung by Brian, Carl, or Al. Or if "Hawaii" is Dennis or Mike (I think it's Mike with a cold).

Not quite up there, but nonetheless all 5 of the original members of Blue Oyster Cult took lead vocals at some point, though the majority are Eric Bloom or Buck Dharma.

I think that is arguable -- it certainly sounds like a Denny song but I don't believe he is actually credited with royalties. Back in those days they were all so coked up they didn't know who slept with whom or who wrote what.

Just for the record, Al Jardine's big chance was "Help Me Rhonda." And interestingly Carl doesn't sing lead on a hit until "Good Vibrations" and barely sang any leads prior to "Pet Sounds."

Everyone sang on the Velvet Underground's first four albums: Lou Reed did most of the vocals, but Nico sang three on VU&N, Cale sang Lady Godiva's Operation and recited The Gift on WL/WH, Doug Yule sang a bunch on VU3 & Loaded, Mo Tucker sang on The Murder Mystery and After Hours on VU3, and Sterling Morrison sang on The Murder Mystery and I'm Sticking With You on VU.

But in terms of one band that had a collection of excellent and diverse lead singers, I'd have to give the nod to The Band: Either Levon Helm or Richard Manuel could have carried a band by themselves as lead singers. And then you throw in Rick Danko for good measure, and you're talking a mighty vocal fighting force. The less said about Robbie Robertson's singing, the better.
