Yeah Gwen, there's an extra doubletracked vocal on that SFM and the piano and bass are a bit clearer. Sounds different after the instrumental exotic bit as well.

combine these with the Exile outtakes and reduxs from last year and finally you have the comprehensive Exile collection many of us expected.

Those are really great listens.
I am grabbing them with soundforge as mp3 files, but I doubt youtube is any more than 128-160K?

Sound quality on YouTube is notoriously bad. I think many of the tapes were converted in the wrong way too. Hopefully the uploader will reply.

It will take quite some time to establish which ones of the 200+ uploads are released and unreleased versions.

I assume Nicky had tapes / acetates from a lot of the of the songs he's worked on, but it might just have been tapes with his favorites as well that this uploader used.

Will you upload them if you grabbed them?
That would be nice.
Thanx in advance.

I think most of the stuff on there are known versions, except the Exile stuff.

This sounds very much like the US first (mis)pressing of SFM. Not too rare, actually...

The Street Fighting Man has vocals I've never heard I think and probably a different mix too, although it's difficult to tell on this laptop.

What a sensational "find" on a standard wednesday - thanks for the heads up !
shame about most songs being instrumentals though; if one were to complain, I mean

Incredible!
The lack of an anthology or playlist like this was one of my critisisms on the recent Nicky Hopkins book actually. That such a playlist would improve the reading experience greatly. I wouldn´t be very surprised if author Julian Dawson knew something about these discoveries. However, he never mentions last years Exile outtakes or these ones, so...

This is great!

OK - opening riff does not sound like Open G to me.

Does anyone think there is any Open G in 'Rock's Off'?

The main riff of Rocks Off is in standard tuning, but no doubt one of the other guitars uses an open G tuning.

There are about three unverified songs left over at Zentgrafs site from 70/71:

Candlewick Bedspread (MJ/KR) -unverified
Hey Mama (MJ/KR) -unverified
Fragile (MJ/KR) -unverified

Here's hoping someone can shine a light on if it's one of those. That would sure make it easier to refer to this one.

Shine a Light is to my ears not different to the version that is available since the Time Trip / Hillside Blues releases in the mid-90's. You do miss Sweet Virginia though -the version is different to anything we've heard before. This very well could be the final take from London before they took it to LA. Amazing to hear that the famous 'Nellcote villa' choir vocals seem to have been added in LA.

That Sweet Virginia seems to be a whole different uploader

That last one is Stuck Out All Alone, has been around for a long while.

I agree Shine A Light is the same, reverb soaked version that has been around for some time.

Though this one runs too fast and sounds bad. Well, they all run too fast.

Now let's all ask LaughingSam to put his hands on these takes!

Shame almost everything runs so fast... the Rocks Off instrumental I don't think I've heard before too?

Fantastic to be able to listen to this. There's two things really striking here -1) Taylor's guitar on the released version is only a tiny part of what he actually played. He was completely cut out of the final version of RO, except for the intro and the lead at the outro, and deservedly so in my opinion and 2) Nicky Hopkins is truly, truly instrumental to Exile. Of course we knew how important he is, but here he is as important as Jagger basically. There's two different melodies going on -Jagger's vocals (missing here) and Hopkin's piano.

And that's the same for the other outtakes here. Rip This Joint features a totally useless guitar by Taylor, largely edited out of the final version. Listening to RTJ one can understand why Richards would state that Taylor 'was not a great rhythm player' or 'great live but not in the studio'. The real king of RTJ is Hopkins, Jagger and Keys. And for Soul Survivor it is truu again -not too inspired slide by Taylor, largely edited out of the final version.

Fantastic new hook on Exile in my opinion.

Here is a pitch corrected and eq'd version of these takes:

No idea what the MP3 KBPS is.... the analysis in soundforge suggests 160. I put them at 320 so as not to deteriorate them further.

Now these sound pretty good...

Yeah on RTJ Taylor is really unfortunate with his slidework. Its like they were done on a completely different stage of the process, him just messing around.

Thanks for the filesonic file, MunichHilton!

In Life Keith Richards lists three more working titles for (probably
instrumental) Exile-tracks: Head In The Toilet Blues, Labour
Pains and Pommes De Terre.

And the backing tracks of Following The River and Plundered
My Soul surely had working titles too.

Without some labeled reels or similar it looks like an impossible
task to say which one is which.
